Oil filters

ok so i'd seen the thing about the porsche? filter that fits.
why?

i've been running wix 51334, the EG33 filter.
the other one is wix 51287, which i recently put on.
it doesn't seem like there's much benefit, except like double the $.
in which case i'd rather change the filter twice.
i'm also running a flitermag, http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...5&autoview=sku
on both engine and ext. trans (wix 51068) filters.

If you're talking about the Porsche 944 filter, the benefits are:

larger surface area = 1. better cooling 2. more filtration 3. increases your oil capacity

it's not going to add 10HP or anything like that, but if u can make your motor work more efficiently why not do it? The OEM filter is clearly way too small for the 3.3L boxer engine on our cars.

BTW, I use STP brand oil filters and it's the same price for the Porsche 944 and the SVX OEM filter, like $6 from auto zone. I've cut one open and they're probably just as good as Wix, they're definitely better than Fram.

i have a hard time believing the svx is so borderline oil sensitive
if i wanted more oil cap i'd get an oil accumulator as insurance.

I haven't measured the 2 side by side, but i'd bet the wix versions i've got here are about the same total area.
these aren't like my different sized chevy ones (wix 51794/51060) where you gain 1qt more capacity in the filter. they're literally twice as big.

Schralper, sorry if my explanation wasn't good enough for you. Everything I said was true, and if you have a better reason for using a larger filter, I'd love to hear it. Or, if you don't see the need for using a larger filter, and would rather use the OEM size filter that's fine too. :-)

i understand the reasoning behind it.
i use the biggest filter i can on my built chebbies.
i just measured the 2
oe wix- 3"x3.25"dia
wix for 944- 5"x3"
my price wix for 944 is exactly twice versus wix#51344
$11.80 vs 5.90
i realize $6 diff ain't that much compared to gas.
i'm gonna compare and see if the oil stays any cleaner in the same mileage.
it's cleaner than before i started using the filtermag.
btw- i'm using 0w30 synth

A bigger filter might be beneficial as it does not get clogged that fast. On the other hand: You might reduce the efficiency as it depends on the pressure applied.
As the line presure does not change but the effective surface of the filter is increased, a bigger filter might work less efficient than a small one.

Don't think the slower speed that the oil passes through the area of the filter is a negative condition. If it actually comes through the surface at a slower rate, if anything at all counts, it could be only positive. The pressure to all the engine components will be exactly the same.

P.S. I went right out and checked out the taller filters and am going to give it a try. I am thinking that any difference may not be noticeable?

the wix 51287 (944 style) has 22% more vol. than the wix 51334 oe style.
580cc vs 472cc
i'm having a hard time see any true benefit from an extra 3.4 oz/100cc of oil filtration. since there's 5 qts. and if i want more cooling i'll add a real oil cooler.
i guess i'll just be changing my 51334 filter more often, even if the belly pan is a hassle.
i'd rather change the filter 2x as often (based on my cost for filter), since it's the filter and not the oil that goes bad first.
especially if you're using a synth oil.
