Wheel Studs
Alright, lemme give ya'll a short history lesson.
About a week ago now I punctured my rear right tire on some ice and eventually had to have it replaced. Now since my spare tire ended up being flat (INSPECT YOUR SPARE) I had to leave the car where it stood, and took the single wheel to a tires plus. After I put the wheel on, I realized that 2 of my wheel studs were stripped as funk. I could not get the nuts to thread and for a few days now I've been driving on 3/5 lug nuts. I know that's a terrible idea and they must be replaced but right now I have nor the time or money. However, soon I should be able to afford to get this fixed, my question is rather simple; How much will it cost, I'm sure one of us already had to do this, I'd like to at least know what kind of money this will take. Also are the studs something I'll have to go to subaru for, or are they universal?

A good honest mechanic will have that car on/off the lift job complete in 1/2hr or less pending nothing goes wrong(ie lug frozen into hub). With the correct tools the studs will extract and go back in very quickly. A common job here, where I've replaced full sets of studs(all 20) on the Evo's with longer units in under an hour for these damn auto-x'ers running dumb ass wide spacers.
Replacing studs is a mindless job, but it's an easy one as well as long as the person doing it knows the procedure. -Adam |

it is simple on many cars. I've never had to do it on an SVX, so I can't say for sure that it is a simple "pound out and pull in" job...
Some cars require you to remove the hub to swap the studs (bearing job). I do know from looking at them, that they are not keyed studs. The important thing to remember is that you need to use a NEW lug to draw the stud through.... don't get an OEM, just get 2 aftermarket cheap ones that are open ended and match the stud threads.

you will however need two oem lug nuts to put on your new studs once they are torqued down and your wheel is on.

If the bolts holding the ABS tone ring are rust free, it's easy. Standard studs can be found at advanceautozoneboys.

You can use a die to restore the threads on your current studs. One of mine was stripped very badly and frozen to the tone ring. Chances are your mechanic will break your tone ring trying to get the stud out. If you don't have the cash to get a new one or the time it takes to order it you might consider this route. I have a die for the SVX if you'd like to use it.

NOT RECOMMENDED! Wheel studs have rolled threads, not cut threads from a die and cut threads will seriously weaken the stud. Not too safe. |

If you don't have the money to do this job, do you have money to pay for damage suffered in an accident or worse because a wheel falls off? I would not drive the car until you get this fixed.

I know it's a bad plan but I'm just in a situation where I can't even purchase the parts till wednesday. Luckily I only needed it to drive it once like that. Since then I've been home and will be fixing the studs before driving the car again.
A friend of mine has offered his assistance on this one. Apparently he's done it already, old girlfriend of his owned an SVX. We're also gonna replace my windshield wipers... In the recent ice storm I accidentally tore the blade assembly off when I was trying to free the wiper blades from the half inch sheet of ice covering my car... It was rather wintery last weekend.

Any update here? I'd like to know how your experience went. I'm in the same situation. I need to replace 3 studs, two on one wheel and one on the other. Both are in the rear of the car.
I'm not driving it, its in the shop when this happened and is still on the hoist. How hard will this be to do? I already have two studs - my main goal will be to immediately fix the hub missing two studs. Thanks!

Out here, I'd just run the stripped ones back on with an impact gun, and go to Les Schwab and tell 'em you need your tires rotated, they'll rotate your tires and replace the stripped studs, and every time I've had 'em do it, they did it for free. I know you guys don't have Les Schwab back there, but most full-service tire shops will do it.

Just though i"d update in case anyone else has to do this.
If you have a magnet and needle nose pliers (long ones) this isn't too hard and does not require removing too much. Take the caliper and rotor off. (Ok, well the rim first ) Take off the four bolts that hold the ABS ring on - these require allen keys. Now the ABS ring should move freely. If not this will take longer. Turn the HUB until the stud you need to replace is in the upper right corner of the brake assembly (Open space behind) Hit stud with hammer. Stud comes out behind abs ring. Use pliers, fingers, magnet to remove old stud. In this same opening 'drop' the new stud in. Rotate the Hub and ABS ring as necessary until the new stud can be accessed by the magnet or pliers. Fiddle around until the stud is inline with the hole use magnet to pull through until fingers cab grab. Once you have torqued the stud in place put back together. Takes very little time. Unfortunately I broke another one when removing my rim. Oh an damn the lug nuts are expensive! $17 each up here! At least the studs are cheap. Cheers, Rob

Well being excited to use my air hammer I pulled the wheel off and just hit the stud w/ the hammer for about .5 seconds. I then pull the rotor off and see something fall out. I broke the ABS ring thing with the stud. I paid allot for the air hammer and never get to use it so I got a little too excited. Not wanting to pull the hub (rear wheel) I was forced to weld it back together. I don't know how long it will last but that was last year, so I may have gotten lucky with it. Time will tell.
