doesn't matter to me, anyway. i have an external HD where all my music resides grouped neatly in folders by artist/album. there's really no need for me to drag it back off the iPOD.

i'm no fan of Apple crap, but i broke down and got an iPOD because they are the easiest to use in a car (which is what i use it for). pop it in the dock, and it charges and sends the audio to my headunit. i have a Creative Labs Jukebox, but you need to connect the power cord, and the cord into the headphone jack to get crappy headphone jack audio. the small control buttons are a PITA, too.
that's cool. i use cd's in teh car cause i'm old fashioned. besides my stereo can play mp3 cd's so i can fit quite a bit on one cd.

when i'm at skool, i use my little video mp3 player i got from hong kong and if i get bored, i got another mp3/video playing device that's really small.

i'll watch family guy or whatever i slap on my SD memory cards.

I won't use an iPod because the quality is too poor. I have an MP3 player on my phone and a 1GB card in it. I use the phone cable to connect to the stereo in place of the CD player.

Not sure what processor the phone uses, but it handles 320, 44.1 MP3s without breaking a sweat.

The cool thing is that when a call comes in, I use the car stereo as the hands free. Works great except when the wife is in the car too and the girlfriend calls (Just kidding)

iTunes and iPod are great for the average consumer. Not for the audiophile or the musician. Unfortunatly, they (Apple) are contributing to the "dumbing down" of the media world. Instead of consumers demanding more true HD content (audio and video), they are demanding an ultra-compressed versions because that is what the mainstream product supports.

what is so poor about the quality? granted, i've never heard older iPods, but the 5th gen video iPod sounds just fine to me. i rip all my CD's at 256k - in fact, i read an article recently where a panel of audiophiles couldn't distinguish between a CD and a 256k MP3. i know i can't, and i'm a musishun. some people do whine about the "preset" EQ settings, and no adjustability, but i leave the iPod on a flat setting and use the much better EQ in my headunit.

i'm no Apple fan, but its the best solutuion for a car, until other manufacturers wake up and make a docking connector that charges the unit and has a line-out. getting compressed audio out of a headphone jack isn't going to cut it for me.

the added benefit of the iPod is that it also makes you smartAr.

this is exactly what i do. i got my first 3rd generation iPod when they were advertised to be pc compatible and i used musicmatch to rip all of my CDs. i had to use my laptop because it was the only computer i had with a firewire connection. it became very unhappy when i loaded it up with over 30gb of music. now i have all the music files on a 200gb external. then when i learned teh iPod wasn't waterproof and had to get it "repaired", the new software wasn't compatible with musicmatch and i was forced to switch over to iTunes.

oddly enough, i bought a home dock on ebay that has USB2 and Firewire connections, and the new iPod video does not work with Firewire.

i use Creative MediaSource Organiser for all my ripping/burning/music library organizing, and only use teh suck-ass iTunes for transferring stuff to the iPod.

That is like 25 hours of music. Do you ever have you headphones off?

25 hours of music will last me a month because I like the songs and play the list continuously 10 times or so then I change it out. Do you only listen to a set once?

Doug

the 3rd gen iPods came with the firewire only. my former boss bought a 4th generation (click wheel) and it came with both firewire and usb 2.0 connectors. when i stopped using the laptop for ripping CDs and moved to the desktop, i borrowed boss man's usb cable, but it didn't charge my iPod while sync-ing. before i replaced teh battery, i was only getting about 5 minutes of play on a fully charged battery. thankfully, now they sell a cable that has two lines from the dock connector: a usb for teh computer and a firewire to power it up.

i don't know about shelfy, but i only use mine in my car. i never have to make a new playlist, because i have 100+ CD's in it set to shuffle. i do have playlists for my favorite driving tunes, classical, etc. if i'm in the mood for something particular.

i went out and bought a firewire cable because all my USB ports were used up, plugged it in, and i got an error message saying it was not compatible with firewire.

i returned the cable and bought a USB2 card, and it charges with the USB2.

headphones? i have a private office and since i'm a number cruncher, i don't attend to many meetings and rarely leave my office. plus i have a one-way commute time of 70 minutes. i'd guess i listen to music about 10 hours per day. unless we sit in teh hot tub and then i may listen another couple of hours.

as for playlists, i don't have use any right now. i have a 40gb iPod and today it has 9480 songs. i listen to them on shuffle mode so it's tough to bored with them when if i could get through the whole library it'd take me about a month and a half to hear a repeat.

probably not with the 3rd generation iPod. if i could justify it, i'd go out and buy a new iPod (since i'm running out of space anyway).
