Angry I just got screwed

ok, so I bought my car with the check engine light on. The previous owner had payed about $115 to get it diagnosed and the place said it was the EGR solenoid valve. So i say ok, i take it to a local dealer (order the part through them) and say put it in. well it turns out that they ordered and put in the wrong part. they installed a EGR valve, which isn't the same thing. I payed about $230 for this thing that did absolutly nothing. I KNOW that I said the correct part but i can't really prove that it was their parts person that screwed up. So now I'm taking it back to the original place that diagnosed it and paying $377, plus a O2 heater coil is also malfunctioning, so that adds ~$250. I HATE when other people f***up and you get screwed for it.

Which dealer did you take it to?

My dealer screwed up with the install of the PS line and the line came loose the other day. I had to go under the car and get it down myself. I am thinking if I should ask them for my money back.

I took it to Gary Lang, because its the closest to me. Not only did they screw up the part, but they also were extremely rude to my mom who tried to call to figure out what was going on when i took it in a second time to have them see what they did wrong or what the new problem was. After the guy was rude, she said " But don't worry about us, i'm sure we'll find somewhere else to take our 3 subaru cars ".... and it was right in front of the manager dude

What you do is simple: You stop payment on the check and you tell them to fix what they were supposed to fix otherwise they don't get paid. It worked for me.

Phew! You frightened me there, for a moment. These days, I'm extremely happy when "the moment" finally comes, too, but, there are still SOME things I don't share with this forum (believe it, or not).

Glad to hear it was about the car, instead of . . . well, you know.

Anyhoo -- I hate to hear that you can't prove they were wrong. Without evidence, there's no case. Look for any shread you might be able to find . . . does the PO have the diagnosis ticket from the other dealer? If he does, you could use it as a "why in the h, e, doublehockeysticks, would I order a valve when this clearly says solenoid.

Hope it works out for you. And, kudos to your mom.

Be careful offering that advice - in a lot of states canceling payment on an invoice that has labor attached to it constitutes fraud, or an attempt to defraud, no matter what mitigating circumstances are present.

I think the best thing you can do is call Subaru and make a big stink about it. The more noise you make the more likely they will be to fix the problem. Did you try talking to the Service Manager at the dealership?

In your dealings with these guys, keep this thought in mind:

You can accomplish more with kind words and a gun than you can with kind words alone, or a gun alone . . .

Seriously, good luck. I've found that reasoning with people in these situations works best, without being confrontational or derogatory. When emotions and language start to heat up, everyone hunkers down, digs in, and really sticks to whatever position they've chosen.

Keep in mind that they have done labor and they did install a part (albeit the wrong one), and they're probably reluctant to give up payment for that. Still, I would hope that the dictates of good customer service (anybody remember THAT concept?) would persuade them to work out some satisfactory deal with you.

From Gary Lang's web site:

Dealer Info:
"We provide the highest level of customer service through our knowledgeable and helpful sales, service and parts personnel. We offer a top-notch customer experience. Whether you are looking for a new vehicle, online specials, need parts or service, "

Parts and Service:
"Our factory-trained service technicians have the experience and knowledge to ensure that the right service is performed on your Subaru. "

Perhaps you should explain to them that you had a less than "top notch customer experience," and, if their technicians were as well trained as they should be that they could tell the need between a valve and a solenoid.

Try writing a kind letter to the owner, explaining the circumstances and that you could realize how a "mistake" could have been made, but, you REALLY need your car fixed properly. Throw yourself on their mercy (if they have any) and show them a spirit of cooperation and possible compromise.
