Running without charcoal canister?

I saturated my evap canister with gas. Should I run without it, or leave it attached until I get a replacement? How critical is this part to normal running?

Any way this would cause a knock sensor code (before I go replace the knock sensor)?

James

Re: Running without charcoal canister?

When the car is not running, the canister absorbs fuel vapor from the gas tank. Without it, you will smell gas fumes under the car. When the car is running, the fuel vapors with filtered air is absorbed from the canister into the intake. Without the canister, you will have unfiltered air going into the intake (dirt, dust, particles?) I would leave it on until you get a new one.

The vapors are absorbed by the charcoal inside and when you start the car, the purge solenoid allows those vapors into the intake and burning off. It doesn't lose its effectiveness.

You can always just loop the vacuum hose as well and bypass it.

Re: Running without charcoal canister?

if you hook it to a vacuum source with the inlet plugged the gas will evaporate and it will be reusable. or just leave it in the sun for a couple days.
