rear housing swap 4.44

I currently have a 4.44. From a legacy gt and I'm wondering if the rear housing from my 3.54 with be a direct swap or even possibly beneficial for torque handling because of the extra clutch disc?

Re: rear housing swap 4.44

I learnt the hard way that you can't run a 4.44 transmission with a 3.9 rear diff. (We swapped the trans without knowing it was 4.44).

AFAIK, you can physically bolt in the 4.44 rear diff without modifying anything (ie no cutting etc), but you will wind up the centre diff causing shuddering and other nasty drive train stresses until something goes boom or you replace the standard transmission with a Legacy transmission.

The Legacy transmission swap seems to be straight forward, again we just unbolted the blown SVX trans and bolted up a Legacy trans without any hassle.

You should wait for someone more knowledgable than me to chime in before proceeding to pull your car apart though.

Re: rear housing swap 4.44

He's talking about the transfer clutch and housing, not the rear differential.

Yes, it should be possible to swap over all associated parts including the housing from the stock SVX transmission. Though, I haven't personally done it.

Re: rear housing swap 4.44

Pardon my ignorance 1986nate, is this an option to a straight 4.44 swap? Advantage and as feasible? I have done the full 4.44 swap.

The extra clutch plate is in the transfer clutch which is on the gearbox, not in the rear housing. You would have to change the transfer gear with the clutch drum attached, then set the clutch plate thickness to suit the clearance for the clutch piston.

As you are increasing the torque capacity for the clutch by reducing the final drive ratio, it is not worth doing.

Harvey.
