Question delayed shifting...

idk why the transmission is doing this but would like to know what to do to fix it.

going from P to D or R the car takes awhile to actually get in gear. once driving it seems fine but to get in a gear from P or N there is a delay.

the fluids are fine as i just changed them and new filter. Any ideas? the car the transmission originally came from had 160k or so miles.

i swapped the drive-train from a 92 LSi into my 94 L which had 202k

transmission worn?

Vic I think it it has low line pressure at idle, as it takes too long to build pressure to engage a clutch.
The early models had a problem with the ATF pump gasket leaking. A pressure test at idle would confirm.

I don't think there is any other way to test other than measuring the line pressure, hot and at idle. Should be between 65/85 psi.
Only way to fix is to pull and fix the gasket.

Otherwise you can keep going, just don't drive in 4 at low speed as the low pressure will cause to band and high clutch to slip. Watch the taco and keep above 2000 rpm in any gear.

thanks harvey i will give it a try but i noticed today after going to emissions (which i failed high HC and CO any help here) that the transmission seems to "slip" when driving as well as delayed take off.

So my problem is this:

going from P or N to any gear, there is a delay in which the car goes into gear. with the car in D and at a stop there is little movement if i take the brake off. when driving the car seems to shift through all gears but seems to "slip" a little before i can feel the lock up. Im not too sure how else to explain what its doing and for it to make sense lol

also there is some front end chatter like metal on metal. when the drivetrain was in the 92 there was nothing but in the 94 there is....cant pin point the source sadly but it only makes noise when the car is moving and seems to get worse if i turn sharp. any ideas here too....

Vic when I say the pump gasket causes the low line pressure. There are other ways that the line pressure can leak out, to cause the problem that you have. could be any of the pipes that plug into the valve body or case.

So you will have to keep the engine rpms up to keep the pressure up.

Vic, I should have thought of it yesterday, but you can get one of Tom's (Svxfiles) resistors, to replace the one behind the battery. It will bump up the line pressure a bit so that it won't slip as much. Won't fix the problem but it will make it last for a while longer. There are a few around here.

Ok thanks. I'll look into that a little more. Do you know an actual fix to the shifting? How about the noise? The noise quiets when under hard acceleration which makes me think diff?

It is a 92 transmission, so it could still have the paper gasket on the pump that causes this problem. Or it could be an internal leak that lowers the pressure. There are a lot of things that wear in there.
I can't see any way to fix the shifting, other than pulling the box and fixing it.

Well found the noise.... Drivshaft was rubbing the heat shield

as for shifting... I'll have to figure it out by trial and error. Is it bad to drive the car the way it is shifting?

If it continues to slip it is, that why I suggested Toms resistor to help out.
You can just unplug the resistor, you won't like the way it shifts, but it will give full line pressure, so that you can see if the slow shifting into P and R disappears.

You keep asking me this, so a quick rundown of the situation.

The gearbox pump is run by the engine, the slower the engine goes, the lower the pump pressure. As yours has a leak in the pressure system, your line pressure is lower, thats why it takes longer for it to build pressure, to go to P or R.
So we have to prevent the pressure getting too low, by keeping the engine rpm up, above 2000 rpm. When you slow below that, shift back to bring the rpms back up, and the line pressure back up, the prevent the band/clutch from slipping.

The slower you drive in a high gear, the higher the load is on the clutch, and the more chance of the box dieing.

but you say to go to P or R....I was saying to go from P or N to any gear (123DR) there is a delay. Im assuming you understand the problem just making sure we are on the same page is all and I am also assuming that what your did say is still true regardless
