Tech: Half the engine runs funny???
Well, there have been a couple people post that
Quote:
BUT I have recently encountered something similar, yet very different. This car had died due to bad gas killing the fuel pump... -Pump was replaced but it still ran very poorly. -I switched out all the injectors on the pass side (this was the side running poorly). -I pulled all the plugs and coils on this side and inspected them w/o any obvious issues. - I check cam timing which was dead on. - Pull the center cover to check the timing on the crank, which was normal - Inspected and tested the EGR At this point, I was very frustrated as there seemed to be no real issue. I continued to pine over this for a couple weeks. Finally I returned to the car fresh. Pulled the timing belt off and just started inspecting everything, Even pull the valve cover to be sure the cams were still in one piece and that they were in time. Then I stumbled upon an idea... maybe the cam gear was the problem. Pulled the sprocket off the pass side exhaust cam to find.... I had to replace the exhaust cam and the timing belt sprocket.. I have a couple theories about how it happened but nothing is absolute... I hope this might help others Tom |

Re: Tech: Half the engine runs funny???
Thanks Tom. That is something that you would not figure would happen, but I guess it can.

Considering that it happened the same time as the bad gas... -it could have been a sharp reaction to the gas the engine kicked and this happened... Also could have been the pulley bolt worked its way loose and caused it Also could have been that someone didn't torque the pulley correctly when doing a timing belt... Someone might not have lined it up properly when installing it too. Who knows right now Tom |

Re: Tech: Half the engine runs funny???
Gee, all those things to go through almost sounded like a dealer was working on it!!
Chances are that the sprocket wasn't lined up right and tightened down without the pin in the slot... breaking the pin loose and causing rust to take over. Went down hill from there. Hard to find because the symptoms that exist are caused by the computer switching over to the limp home mode. Out of time tough to analyze when timing marks all line up on all the pulleys. Re: Tech: Half the engine runs funny???
YT gave me the heads up on it about a week ago and takes me a while to work on my own stuff.
Christine (our posessed 93) has run great, and like crap off and on for a while now. I've had the timing belt cover off since the water pump and timing belt change because it sounded and acted like a slipped timing belt. Its a keyed pulley that Ive never sceen loose!

Re: Tech: Half the engine runs funny???
Found the same thing on my Outback a month or 2 ago. I knew something was wrong when I loosened the pulley bolt with little to no effort.

Re: Tech: Half the engine runs funny???
It really is.
Mine went to the dealer for 22 days with no solution. They did change the transmission 3 times They kept thinking... Gee, must be a bad transmission, changed it and still only half the engine works... so get another transmission... Changed it again... Gee, must be a another bad transmission, changed it and still only half the engine works... so get another transmission... Got it home and found the real problem in a day... (I pray a lot) Bet OT saw my story but didn't relate to it? Anyway, he beat the heck out of my dealership. not 3 weeks for OT! Maybe this will help others look at this possibility when the marks line up. I even took the thing apart and checked the timing belt before I decided to let the dealer find the problem. Snow was coming... no heat in the garage so went for the free loaner 2008 Subaru. Keith |
