valve cover gasket

well yesterday i got one of my oil leaks fixed. i got the valve cover gaskets from subaruparts.com. can i say what a PITA. the passenger side took about an hour to do. and the driver side took 3 hours to do. i could not even get driver side one out of the engine bay. so i cleaned as much as i could and dropped in the gasket and it turned out fine.

p.s. it was not as bad as i thought it would be

OK I HAVE A QUESTION and I didn't want to make a new thread.

Do I have to drain the oil to open up the valve covers?

I mean is there not oil that's going to spill out if I open them up or should I drain a quart or two first?

No Nik, You don't have to drain the oil to change the valve covers....there might be a little pooled up to runout, but not much...the oil drains to the oil pan, which is lower than the valve covewrs..hope this helps..

Don't you ever take out a pan or a cover from the engine unless it is cooled 100%. Believe me i have seen engine get F***ed up because of that
The thing is the seperated parts get wavy surfaces when they are still hot.

So which side is considered left? Intake side? Battery? I'm assuming the passenger's side...

Generally from the drivers position facing forward.

And yeah, the left has a lot more crap in the way of getting it out.

The inside of the covers are marked pretty clearly.
