Red face SVX Differential pinion part # 38100AA551

Hi guys,

I found a post earlier saying that the pinion gear (with shaft) had it's part number changed from 38100AA170 to 38100AA551. I think the post was about 3 years old. The text in the post was :

Subaruparts.com. Double click on the hypoid gear set (first part on the list) and it takes you to a page where it shows $0 for total and a red X next to quantity, indicating the part may not be available. Notice the bulletin number next to the part number (PT280397). Now type in 38100AA551 in the "add another part" box. Notice the same bulletin number. That bulletin explains that 38100AA170 has been changed to 38100AA551.

So I went ahead and bought a set (Crown and pinion gear - along with other parts = $770).

Problem is, the pinion shaft is slightly different than the origional. At the end of the shaft, the place where the main drive gear goes is further forward that the origional - putting it together it looks the same but I know that the teeth on the inside of the drive gear are only half on the teeth of the shaft.

Has anybody tried this part? I'm ready to put my diff back together - and I really do not want to break it!!

Any help is appriciated - any body from Small Car tried it?

Are you referring to the rear end?
Take it back to your vendor and tell him it's different.
Then pay for shipping and I will send you one, or two, or three, with or without the housings!
I'm tripping over these things!

If you are referring to the transaxle thats a whole different story.
And it would be much easier to just swap out transmissions.

The new shafts are different. The bulletin specifies a whole bunch of parts that need to be changed at the same time to make it work. It's a huge pain in the arse. Buy a used ring and pinion set and save money and aggravation.

Do you know where I can order the old part number?

Do you know where I can order the old part number?

38100AA170 - Gear Set ( Pinion w/shaft + Crown Gear)?

Cheers

MAD4SVX

(My poor SVX has been off the road for over a year because of this problem - this has been the only time I have had money to get the parts - now I find out that it may cost another $300 to get the extra new type parts!)

I can pull one out of a transmission and ship it to you. It would be the front diff housing, the front ring and pinion, and the all important shim.
$100.00 plus ground shipping and packaging.
The last one I shipped, everything in one box, weighed 58#s and cost $80.01 to ship (UPS) to Oregon. And that was before gas prices went wacko.

If you do ship it then do so before next month. I can speak for Fedex when I say that the ground fuel surcharge was already set for this month but will likely increase for next month.

You can't. Subaru stopped making the old style long ago.

I just spoke with the Mail Room and they have not yet raised ground shipping here. But as soon as I go to ship something they probably will.
