Question catalytic question

if i'm not mistaken, catalytic converters are not usually hollow.right? i took off my secondary cat to day and it's completely hollow inside except for a piece of wire mesh surrounding the inside of it that i pulled out. has someone already punched it out?i know i have a cat that clogs and unclogs and i thought that was the one but how could it be?

Someone must have knocked it out. You may as well take the mesh out while you're there.

Problem?

You should not have a problem unless you have a 96 or 97 car or have to pass an emissions test. Actually it should breathe easier. Someone has made a resonator out of your catalytic converter.

Significant Technical Input
The apparent question is which end of the cat was the mesh in? At the 'in' or the 'out'? If it was at the 'in' the substrate sometimes breaks loose and rolls around until it forms a ball which can eventually travel further downstream. These balls can intermittently plug up a pipe, resonator or muffler. Best check is to drop the entire exhaust and tip it up and down and listen for something rolling around inside. Sometimes you can retrieve the culprit, other times you just have to replace the part it's trapped in.

The front cats are pre-cats, the rear is the main cat. Universal replacement cats will replace the rear and are rated to also replace the front at the same time. So if you are concerned about the fronts not working just replace the rear with a universal. If the fronts aren't plugged just leave them in place or gut them.
