A/C replacment/rebuild costs?

my AC compressor clutch is bad and I think the system could use either a recharge or a conversion.. fortunately it's looking like it'll be at least another month before new hampshire heats enough to necessitate the repair.. can anyone give me an approximate cost to expect?

I went through the same problem a while ago. The clutch was bad, but the system was working fine. This was on one of my 93s.

I bought a used compressor from a 1992 (low mileage), drained the oil out of the system, and then recharged it with new coolant.

The cost would be for a compressor (aprox $100 or less), a conversion kit if yours is a 92 (so you can use the new coolant) which would be about $35. for the recharge kit and maybe another $25 for the conversion. This is all approximate and would vary on your local costs.

thanks for the reply.. i'm not too comfortable disassembling my ac system blindly because from what i understand, it's under pressure.. if you get some time in the next few days/weeks could you do me a favor and write up a step-by-step? or point me to one?

I have not had an SVX system converted but did have a Ford P/U done and costs should be relatively the same. Not addressing the bad clutch, however. That is separate. You should be able to replace the clutch yourself if it does not cost too much. Otherwise, I agree with the used AC compressor including clutch.

It cost me $225 to convert. System completely flushed, checked, new lube oil, appropriate 134R compatible O'rings, new dryer, vacuum pumped and recharged.

The O'rings and dryer are essential.

Still haven't converted mine even though I have the kit and the dryer just sitting here. If I have a problem with my current system I'll do the update.
