Belt Help

My harmonic balancer blew apart on me a few months ago, and I am going to install a nice underdrive pulley this weekend. I was given part numbers for certain belts that I need to use. The alternator side calls for a 33" belt. My auto parts store couldnt get a 33" belt, but could get a 33.5" belt. They said that I shouldnt have any probs with the extra half inch of play, and that the tensioner should easily take that up. Is this true?

Thanks for the help!

Mike

Half an inch is probably the most you would want to increase the belt size. You may need to replace it sooner if it stretches though.
What's the next size smaller belt?

For an underdrive pulley I would certainly think you would want to go smaller.....

I'm not sure, David. I really have no choice, as Saturday will be my only chance to replace the pulley before the Reading meet. My general question here is:

Will the tensioner take up 1/2" of extra belt?

I dont really care if i have to replace the belt 6 months down the road. I just need to know if this is going to work for me now.

Thanks for your response.

I'm thinking you should be able to get away with one size smaller belt but you will probably have trouble getting the belt on and you won't have to tighten the tensioner much.

Well, I got one that is .5" too long. If it doesn't work out, I will take it back and figure something else out i guess.

Belt

Where you getting it Mike? I was shocked to see that Advance Auto Parts had one in stock when I replaced mine this past Sept. Its a Dayton or was until today. Probably not the best belt as mine kinda blew apart on me today. 5 months and all of 3500 miles??? At least you'll know it'll fit and you can get it that day. Manor Shopping center Advance had it!

Thumbs up

I reckon it should work too Mike.

When you have given it a few runs, recheck the tension as it may stretch a bit. Your tensioner should still be able to take out the slack.

Just for the record:

The belt worked with plenty of play left in the tensioner. Everything went smoothly.
