paint thinner/black market smell

i'm right now working on a lexus LS400 in the garage, its been sitting in there for a week (waiting for stupid brake pad sensor) and today the whole garage smells of a paint thinner type smell. i checked all the cans and nothing is punctured.

apparently when my parents parked the impreza the same smell came.

anyone have a clue?

its a technical Q&A and it has suby relations to it considering it happened with the impreza but never did find the source. i'm just wondering what on a car could cause it.

Re: paint thinner/black market smell

What on a car could cause a paint thinner smell? Never encountered that before, but the only thing I can imagine is fuel leaking on something that is reacting to it and giving off the smell.

Re: paint thinner/black market smell

Have you showered lately?

Did you use lots of brake parts cleaner? Although it dries quick it isn't exactly a fan of some older rubber parts.

Re: paint thinner/black market smell

i had the same lexus in my garage at home once for a smell that came out of the ac vents. turned out one of the fuel lines was leaking around a hose clamp. the fuel line was back against the firewall and partially under the intake manifold so it was hard to find. it didn't really smell like straight gas because it was washing all the other stuff off the engine and them evaporating. something worth checking.
