The bolt for the REAR lateral arm has the nut on the front (towards the CV axle) and the bolt comes out the back. It's the bolt for the FRONT lateral arm that won't come out because of the CV boot.

Okay, now, didn't get a chance to work on it for a while, and this morning when I tried to pull the axle out of the differential, it appears that it disconnects inside the CV boot. Which, if correct, means I need to remove the CV boot, preferably without damaging it. So, how do I safely take off the boot band in order to remove the boot, and am I going to have to get a new boot band or will I be able to remove it without damaging it?

Re: Bent rear "toe-in" rod

Just grab a pry bar and pop the CV axle out from the diff. You should not need to take off the boot to get the axle out and you should not be yanking on the axle in such a way that it could mess up the joint in the first place. The inner CV joint slides to change the length of the axle.

Okay, just want to make sure I'm using the pry bar in the correct place. Is this where I'm supposed to pry?

Re: Bent rear "toe-in" rod

Yep. Just don't be too rough with it. I remember the driver's side one being quite a bit more difficult to pop out than the passenger side (they are a little different). I used a crowbar, came right out.

Did you need to open the diff cover and remove C clips or anything?

Or are they just press in and go?

should just pop out and in with smooth firm pressure. don't "hammer" or "jerk" at them.

There are spring clips that hold in each axle. They pop in and out, but they do take a bit of encouragement. One side, the spring clip is attached to the axle and one side the spring clip part stays inside the diff. I forget which side is which, but one side was more difficult to pop out than the other.

They aren't like the fronts, where they just slide out after the spring pins are removed.

Okay, I got it out, thank you! Got the stupid bolt out, got the new lateral arm in and the bolt back in. Is there anything special I need to do to pop the axle back in or do I just apply force to the hub? Tap with a hammer or steady push?

Re: Bent rear "toe-in" rod

Steady push. Getting it in is a different challenge, since you can't really "pry" it in.

Re: Bent rear "toe-in" rod

Okay, it's finished, the car's back together, I have a feeling I'm running a LOT of negative camber on my left rear wheel, but otherwise it seems to be sound. One question. What's this thing for?

I put it back on but it seems pretty pointless.

It's about two inches in diameter. It covered the nut at the front of the inner mount for the front lateral arm. Had a special washer with for tabs to hold it on.
