Rear shaft u-joint
I have an automatic 1992 SVX, I need to replace the rear shaft u-joint. Can someone tell me how many are on my car? I would like to place an order and I was asked how many I need.

You should have 2 u-joints on the driveshaft. One at the tranny and one at the rear differential. Unfortunately they were not designed to be replaced
You may be able to get someone to put a custom end on it though.

A1 Driveshaft in Milwaukee does that conversion. I've had two SVX driveshafts rebuilt by them with replaceable U-joints. This was at least 3 years ago so don't quote me on the price, but I think it was about $200 for each driveshaft.
Don't bother getting greasable U joints, they are a pain in the ass to get to to lube. Doug

(quote from Beav)
"Some mechanics torch the cross in half, drive the joint across and use a die grinder to remove the stake marks. Others use a different type of burr and just go at it without the torch. Other than that the replacement is the same as any other u-joint." "http://www.staugustinefwd.com/RWD/Staked/staked.html I called the company and they have the u-joints for the SVX for 40 dollars. My mechanic said he has no problem installing it and has done a few in the past. Any thoughts? Once again, if the trans shop said 'rear', Is that only 1 u-joint? Or should I change both front and back? |

Some SVX shafts have two, some three. Hint: they all turn at the same speed and get greased at the same time (read: once - at the factory.) I'd do them all at the same time, especially after dropping the exhaust to remove the shaft.
U-joints typically run about $13-$20 ea. at the parts counter. My posting of the site previously mentioned was really in order to show availability. I would guess that there is at least one competent driveshaft shop near you. They will have the same joint(s) available. The joints mentioned aren't 'special', they just aren't typically listed in a catalog as a direct replacement for the SVX. They are sorted by size and, again, a good driveshaft shop is used to cross-referencing joints in this manner. Contact them for pricing.

Actually my yoke was also bad. I found a shop that welded on a new piece. So now I have both yokes and a replacable u-joint on the trans side. It cost me $250.00.

i had it done on a legacy for 175.00. They used a ford ranger universal joint. The plus side is the joint had a grease fitting on it.
