Ok,so I think tht what you are saying is that I can buy a used differential with say that 4.11 or 4.44 gear and just bolt that baby on I hope.My axles should work fine I hope.

Well here is how the front diff works...
It has a HUGE pinion gear which runs from the rear of the transmission... up the pass side... to the front diff case. There is a seal in the oil pump (~1" spacer between the trans and differential) to keep the gear oil out of the ATF and the ATF out of the gear oil. The pinion has a big 4 bolt flange bearing outer race which is bolted to the front of the oil pump. On this flange the factory lays "shims" which push the whole pinion shaft closer to or pull further from the carrier. Use the shims specific to the pinion shaft NOT the transmission. This means use the shims that come with the pinion of the new differential and scrap the old ones along with the old ring and pinion. Then just go ahead and replace the ring gear and be sure you set the side plates at the right #of turns and you should be good to go. The absolute best way to get a front diff is if the ring gear is still in the front case. This means you don't have to worry about side to side adjustment of the ring gear and if you use the shims for the new pinion, there is no adjustment needed. Hope this doesn't confuse you more but I figured you are a knowledgable guy and can understand what I am saying if you can see the parts in front of you Tom |
