Magnaflow Engine-back Exhaust finally installed!

Ok guys, here is what I did.

I needed a new Y pipe/cat-thing so rather than try to hack up the stock exhaust which would probably just rust out somewhere in a different spot when I was finished, I decided to do an engine back, at the time I was using this car for street and track...

2" from the collectors back to a magnaflow Y-pipe (bungs for O2 sensors welded in)

2.5" out of the Y-pipe to a Magnaflow Hi-flow Cat

2.5" to Camaro/Firebird muffler

2.5" out of the muffler to tips that look 100% stock, they are just a hair bigger, but a quick glance it's stock.

The Problems:
Well the car pulled great, no low-end loss, had a nice deep grumble at idle, but as soon as you got on it, it got real buzzy and ricey. It was deafening loud as well.

The Fix:
Inserted a Magnaflow resonator after the cat before the muffler 2.5" In/Out 4" roundx18" resonator. This has made things all nice now. It's relatively quiet at idle and up to about 2500-3000 rpms. When you get on it hard you know it's there but it's not crazy loud. It's still a bit tinny for my liking but may change out the actual can to see if we can make it a bit deeper sounding. Any thoughts on what others might be good? Dynomax? Flowmaster?

If you have no front cats, that can have a negative effect on sound quality. I had a similar problem and put in a couple of glasspacks in the positions of the front cats and that solved my problem. I used to have nearly the exact same system you described, but with the front cats. And sounded absolutely awesome. But the Magnaflow is one of the louder mufflers out there, so you could shut it up a little with a Dynomax or Flowmaster.

Thanks for the input! We just put a header on our friend's Spec V yesterday and it sounds like a mini-svx now, so we were leaning toward the catless headers being part of the problem.

MikeCG has a flowmaster 80 on an otherwise stock system. I got a chance to hear it in person at the Crab Meet and it sounded awesome. Not as deep as I had hoped but it really did sound like a porsche when he got on it. Real quiet at low revs but loud enough at high revs. I'm 80% sure at this point that that is how I will go when the time comes. I still am looking for a system that sounds closer to a 'Vette but that may not be possible due to the lesser cubes.

Yes the exhaust has given significant power increases on the butt dyno, especially in the >4500rpm range. I just installed the shiftkit from smallcar and we'll see if that helps

i'd think instead of using a magnaflow, you could use 2 seperate flomaster 60 series, or even the 50 series... they are more for mustangs and camaros, but they have a sound bite of a freaking PT cruiser and IT sounds bad ass with it... so the SVX would almost undoubtly sound a little grumblier (i like making up words)

i had the same setup with a flowmaster, i found it ricey without the inline resonator and it sounded absolutely GORGEOUS with it in, deep not to loud. I kept the cats, figured it wasnt worth removing them as they basically shut off as soon as they warm up and are primarly to heat the 02 sensors.

I think my system sounds damn good. It's funny thoe the Magnaflows seem to change in tone as they warm up. When they are cold they sould a bit ricey, but as they warm up they get a deeper sound to them that I love. I hated the sound that the flowmasters made. Flowmasters are for 5.0 and thats is it.
