When I turn the wheel there's sound from the back
I have a MY 1996 nordic domestic market SVX which is very, very similar to an S4. This happens every morning:
* Put trans in R, back out of the garage in an arc. * Full stop with foot brake fully down. * Near full lock to the left * Croaking sounds from the back of the car, as in the back wheels. * Put trans in D or 3. So for a while I thought it was those rusty brakelines or just some hydraulic or mechanic artefact from the cold car. But... the brakes are full, the trans isn't touched. The car doesn't move. There should be no play in the brakelines. The cranking from the back is when I turn the wheel! The sound only comes in this situation. But what's causing it? Surely, I don't have 4WS?

It's possible slight binding from the transfer clutch.

Re: When I turn the wheel there's sound from the back
Which one is that? I've a got a planetary thingy, remember.
Do you think the sound originates from the rear diff? It sounds more like coming from the back far left (but that's probably because I sit on the left). Why would the servo pump or whatnot affect that? I'm only turning the steering wheel and keep the brakes down. There is no actual movement forward when this is occuring, the car still in "R". Tomorrow, I will put in in Neutral and not brake while I turn the wheel. Sorry for the sloppy description anyway. Maybe I should try to make a sound recording, it's very there and should be picked up on just about any microphone. EDIT: I'm not trying to convince myself it's 4WS, I've just considered the pressure in those rusty brakelines and possible ...interaction... between the steering and brake systems.. uh

Re: When I turn the wheel there's sound from the back
Well, even if you had a 4ws version, which is impossible as yours is a 96 and they stopped making 4ws in 94 I believe, it would be quite obvious at a glance under the car. So that can be ruled out.
I don't know the VTD trans system too well, Harvey is much more knowledgeable. I'm not saying it's a full on binding type situation, but rather just that it ever so slightly is binding up. I believe it is possible for this to happen even on the VTD transmissions, just seemingly less occurrences. It could be noise coming from the strut. *I want to clarify that I meant no sarcasm at all in the first sentence. Just purely information |

Re: When I turn the wheel there's sound from the back
Absolutely no sarcasm observed from my side And yes, binding.. I don't know. The car is not moving at all. All search results describe the symptom from moving cars.
Both the servo and brake system is hydraulic, right? Do they have anything in common to the extent that the systems can affect eachother every so slightly? Could the brake line loose pressure while the servo pump is in use right after a cold start?
