Another wiring question.

So, power mode is successful. I have a nice pushbutton switch tucked away somewhere, but it's bothering me that I don't have a real place for it. I had an idea though, but I didn't do it for fear of breaking something. The parking lights switch. It's in a perfect, discreet location, and wouldn't require adding any holes (my biggest fear). Can I simply connect my power mode switch to the terminals of the parking lights switch? In theory, when the button is pushed, the parking lights and power mode will both come on. Will this have any negative effects on the car? It's probably a stupid question, but I'm afraid connecting the ecu to another input of voltage will confuse or damage it. If I don't, I'll just disconnect the parking lights switch and rewire it to house my power mode switch.

PS, if someone has an image of the switch from the back so I know which terminals are power, which are lights, etc. that would be fantastic!

Re: Another wiring question.

Why not do exactly what you want to do but get another set of switches... on ebay all the time:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/92-97-Subaru...-/140555444225

... and install this new switch on the right side of the steering wheel where the "coin holder" is now. It will fit right in with no modification.

Re: Another wiring question.

I already have that same new switch where you described, both with switches in use.

Re: Another wiring question.

Can you post some pictures and explain the power mode installation?
The photos on the original thread on this subject was removed. Thanks!

Re: Another wiring question.

I didn't take any pictures, but if you read this and check the photos on page 12, you should be able to do it.

Re: Another wiring question.

I don't think the parking light switch would work, because it is switching power to the parking lights (I assume) and the Power mode requires grounding the pin on the TCU. So if you connected the power mode wires to it as well, you would effectively create a dead short to the parking light circuit and give battery power to the pin on the TCU, which I'm guessing would not be cool for it.

If you have access to a parts car, steal the shift lock button from it and mount a little push on/off switch under it to put below the shift lever. I just did this in my car (installed it today actually :-), and it works well. No drilling any holes, and it looks stock. I also am using the coin holder spot for switches, and I've already made a switch next to the rear defroster button, so the spot below the shifter was my only option. Parts cars are handy

I'll be adding some pics to my locker when I get a few spare minutes...

I already made this switch press-able, but I can't figure out how to get a switch in there. How did you do it? I was going to do the manual mode with a shift-lock switch originally, but nobody has one available anywhere and it seemed to be too much of a hassle. I'll probably disconnect the parking lights wires and reconnect the power mode switch wires.

Re: Another wiring question.

I used the "manual" button on the shifter when I did it in my black '97. I added a DPST switch that switches it back to do the manual mode thing. (Although there is a loose wire somewhere so the manual mode doesn't actually work, but I don't care, manual mode is useless.) You must keep the manual button able to work somehow in case you need to check codes, since the procedure to check tranny codes requires pressing the manual button. The OBD2 cars don't need this however, since you can also just check trans codes through the code reader.

I really like the manual button on the shifter for power mode, I use it very regularly when I'm using my black SVX (I switch DDs every month or so).

Re: Another wiring question.

Manual mode is actually very useful to me. My brake band needs an adjustment, because at slow speeds and low RPM's, it get's confused and shifts hard occasionally. If I put it in manual mode during traffic or parking lot speeds, I can decide when to shift (if at all, I usually just leave it in 2nd), making it much easier on my brake band

Manual mode is most certainly not useless. It has a very specific, and very helpful use. It allows you to start from a stop in second gear which is very useful in winter conditions.
