fried ecu?!

while fixing the alternator connector, one of the wires kinda touched the alt body for like 1 sec before I take them apart
I think one of the fuses blew but all of them were still connected(there was a little smoke in the fuse box)
now nothing works...

what have I done ?

Re: fried ecu?!

Check your fusible link. It is in the fuse box and looks like a thick piece of wire. They're about $5 new from Subaru.

Everything else SHOULD be okay if it tripped the fusible link. The only situations where anything else gets damaged is if there is an overvoltage/overcharging situation when the voltage regulator goes out in the alternator. This can lead to fried control modules and wiring, but in your situation, replace the link and you should be good to go.

When doing any electrical work, always disconnect the battery first.

Since electrical systems and ECUs, TCUs, wiring harnessed are kind of expencive, why not just use the right, proven, Subaru part?

the OEM part didn't seem of a high quality...I mean how could it? it's just a copper wire
I couldn't find anything like this in part stores so I guess that leaves me with one option

thank you guys...great help like always

Hmm, from Subaru the part lasts twenty years, and costs $10.00.
So FIFTY CENTS A YEAR is too much to keep your SVX running properly.

Couldn't agree more. Don't go for a cheap fix on something like this. That copper wire you got with connections may not be the same resistance as the fusible link and may take more to "blow" it leading to a possibility of frying things. As OT said, $10 is a lot cheaper than replacing all of the control modules and some wiring in the car. And YES, it does and has happened. Just ask Dayle. I had to send an ABS module, TCU and a few other modules because of an overcharging situation. Not to mention the few other modules he at least had on hand to replace on that car.

Do things right, or don't do them at all.

actually it could only last 'til the next time you start it up but that's not the point...I was looking for the exact part, from another store because subaru dealership is closed on sundays and I'm going to need the car tomorrow
why do you guys have to tie everything with money and destroyed or burnt cars?!

i strongly advise getting a legit part instead of a made up one because the link is supposed to have the high angle and that is what takes the wires apart when melted...if it was short and/or made out of a more flexible wire, it wouldn't have blown

Re: fried ecu?!

Be sure to order a couple, or find some in a local junkyard with Subies. Subaru used the same ones in just about every subie in the 90's, and maybe even newer as well. If you need one ASAP
