Re: How many SVX left?
So, divide that by 50 states and the purely hypothetical number of svx's in your states is what, say.... 150-ish? Plus, there are only like 10 or whatever in alaska probably, and I'd guess less in Hawaii. Plus subarus certainly seem to be a "regional" car from what I see. You don't see a ton of them in the midwest, but much more of them on the east coast. guess I'm not sure about out west as I haven't travelled there much. I've actually only seen 12 in person in my life. And I know there are places where there are a lot of them around.
Still sad to think of, but on the flipside it's not horrible. Everytime we take our cars out they are more rare. And almost everyone that I talk to about the SVX either remembers it from "back in the day" or always thought they were cool and still appreciates them. I always think that's cool. People that know what they are, the rarity of them, and how important of a car it was at the time.

I did see one yesterday. New owner creeping through the neighborhood talking to some guy walking his dog. Seemed pretty thrilled with my car. The "math" I've done says there are more than we realize. For Anchorage there is at least two per residential square mile. By the numbers, +30 SVXers, only ~3-4 on the board, and only one consistently. That's 2 to 10% level of activity for a known population. I do think there are many more we just can not see.

Re: How many SVX left?
@ NikFu S.: I tend to agree, there are probably at least twice as many around as are on the road very often. Also, even though I've only seen about 3-4 SVXs in Tampa, I've seen at least another ten on craigslist and autotrader in the last year. Orlando probably has twice as many total as Tampa for some reason. The Miami area probably has as many as Orlando. I'd estimate about 200 spread over the whole state. Also, I'd bet there's a big spread in the condition of the cars between pretty bad and really good.

Re: How many SVX left?
If you use 200 per state, which I think is very high for most states, that would be 10,000 for the US. We only had 14,257 in the US to begin with. I don't know what you are using for your research other that the SWAG method.
SWAG = Scientific Wild Ass Guess .

Also, Florida probably has more than all the other southern states, so it wouldn't be 10,000 total.

I think there is more than 100 per state. There is probably around 70-100 in all of Alaska but the more populace states I would not be surprised if there were 200-300 per, 100-200 in the less dense states.

Re: How many SVX left?
So what's the number of SVX's represented by people on this forum? How many do we KNOW are left, that is?

7000 viable examples in remaining in the U.S. is probably close, if a tad optimistic. This number, whatever it is, will drop like a rock over the next five years. Granted I don't live in an urban area, but I do travel to Atlanta regularly and I've still seen only one other SVX on the road, anywhere, ever. dcb |

I have not listed any of them without a VIN or last 6 numbers of it. That is the only way I know if I have listed or have counted it. The numbers are put into the Regestration Forum every once in a while so members can see them and the colors and models they represent (without the VINs).

Re: How many SVX left?
I think there are more SVXs in PA than any other state. It is one of the top states anyway.

Re: How many SVX left?
I myself have only seen one other SVX here in the city and that is "alcyonelunacy" aka Clint here on the forum. I just barely caught a glimpse of a laguna in Green Bay while there to visit family. I have only ever seen 2 other SVX on craigslist for our city/area with one being a parts car and what reminded me of these cars and got me on my way to getting my first. The second one was just listed a couple months ago that had 235k miles but surprisingly, the body was still good and while the transmission had binding according to the ad, no major issues. I have talked to a couple people who were interested in some parts that are in the Milwaukee area. From looking at craigslist though, it is very apparent that they are much greater in numbers in the northern and western parts of Wisconsin and they seem to be all over Minnesota as well compared to nearby. Michigan and Illinois also seem to have a fair amount but it really seems like there are many more in the northeast than any other area. This could probably be easily explained for by the simple fact of the obvious being that they have rough winters and people would want a performance car that could also hold its own in the snow.
The other reason I believe more were sold there is that there are many larger cities and suburbs with people who made enough money to be able to afford them at the time. Remember that the US was dipping into a significant recession around that time and just because there were a high number of MY92's produced and sold, most were not sold even by the end of 92 but lasted well into late 1993 sitting on lots as brand new cars. Re: How many SVX left?
Yeah there are certain factors that make one area more prone to more SVX's residing there than others. In Incline Village, North Lake Tahoe to Truckee.... about a 20 miles drive, i saw no less than 17-20 different SVX's on those roads. I couldnt figure out why I saw so many here and so few in Orange County until i thought about it for a bit.
North Tahoe has a lot of rich people. North Tahoe also get a ton of snow in the wintertime. People needed AWD in the winter, but a lot of people didnt want to drive hulking pickups or SUV's..... and didnt want to be seen in something as boring or low-budget as a legacy or Impreza or whatever else Subaru offered in the 90's. The rich folks found the perfect solution, the SVX.... a combination of good looks, summertime performance, comfort, and winter handling.... and the only drawback was the price, which Mr Richy Rich from Tahoe could easily afford. Subsequently these cars were passed down from parents to kids of driving age, hence, thats why I saw so frigging many up there in my daily drive to work and around town. Ill have to say that there are a good many more SVX's on the road in places with similar demographics than say, somewhere like Houston or Phoenix... since AWD wasnt important there and you could buy something with much more performance at that time for the same sticker price. My thoughs anyways |
