Annoying Tranny stuff

Hi all,
I got my car back from my daughter after 2 years. I have repaired a few items (with help from the group) and now I have moved onto the next problem. The Torque converter lock appears to lock and unlock at freeway speeds under certain loads. On my way home, the converter locks about 2 1/2 miles into the trip. It will unlock and lock several times as the gradient from flat starts to increase for the next hill until it steepens enough, and at that point it locks and remains locked until I approach the crest of the hill. When approaching the crest, as the gradient lessens, the converter will unlock and lock about once every second or two until the gradient lessens to almost flat, at which point it locks again, only to repeat this behavior on the next hill, and the next...
I live in the Seattle area and hills are a fact of life. Any suggestions as to the cause and cure of this annoying little gremlin?

TIA Chip.

Re: Annoying Tranny stuff

If your TPS is out of adjustment it could do that. Check your TPS, I think there are instructions in the How To docs...

Do you have an external tranny cooler? Tranny Temp Gauge? When the ATF gets below 100* the TC will unlock.

Re: Annoying Tranny stuff

The tachometer in my silver SVX ticked back and forth like a metronome in a certain narrow throttle range, due to the torque converter locking and unlocking. Replacing the throttle position sensor was the cure.

When my gauge works and it's cold out, I can feel the TC unlock at when it drops below 100 and lock up once it climbs a little above 100. I have the temp sensor in the output line from the trans.

Re: Annoying Tranny stuff

Thanks Guys,
It looks like an easy test and fix if the TPS is the problem, but I am a bit surprised at the cost of a new one. I am seeing between $150 to $316!!
For what they are (A potentiometer) this is pretty outrageous. I will try to find one in a junk yard with low miles.

I will post results when I have them.

Re: Annoying Tranny stuff

Also check your ATF level. I have had my TC lock and unlock because the fluid was low.

Re: Annoying Tranny stuff

Hi all, sorry to hijack.

I know I have asked this before, but WHY oh WHY, does the transmission transmit SO MUCH heat into the cabin?? I drove for 2 hours today and by the time I got home, the coins in my ashtray we almost TOO HOT to touch!! I could feel heat blowing around my legs (I had shorts on, no shoes).

I have a MEGA radiator, and transmission cooler fitted, but am still very concerned about this heat issue. The whole centre console seemed hot, including the stock CD and radio unit.

Re: Annoying Tranny stuff

Hello Group,
I am pleased to report back that my converter lock-unlock problem has been cured by replacing the throttle position sensor.
To everyone: Thank You

Chip.
