Question Any garage door enthusiasts out there?

The rolling cover that keeps the Batmobile safe from roving bands of Cash for Clunker raiders, has failed me. This thing was here when I bought the house 25 years ago, & has done what I've paid it to do (go up & down faithfully) ever since, until last week. I came home from a week-long trip, pushed the remote button, & hear nothing but a grrrr sound. Turns out she'll go down just fine, but won't reverse. I fiddled with all the mechanical "start-stop" hardware, which works fine. The motor simply won't reverse. I even called the Genie help line, & talked with a gal who had me climb a stepladder & play with a few connections, after which she she proclaimed it officially kaput. I'd replaced the receiver, the box with the dangling antenna wire, about three years ago, because the remotes ceased to function, & all was fine 'til now. There's a printed circuit board mounted inside the motor housing, & I'm assuming that where the problem lies....but I can't prove it! So, if there there are any mechanically inclined folks in here who can tell me what to bang on with a big hammer, I'd love to save my Genie from the scrap heap. I can buy a lot o' boxed wine for the price of a new unit. It's a model 450 screw drive tugging on a 2 car wooden single door.

Thankew, Ron.

Thankew, Ron.
Well Ron, my Genie grants me 3 wishes and I would wish for my door to work again!
My second wish would be for a couple more boxes of wine,
and the last wish - 3 more wishes!

Re: Any garage door enthusiasts out there?

ive worked into garage doors for about 2 years , i would suggest u changing your motor. since you want to start working on changing the printed circuit board , estimated price of 100$ , tell yourself that for 300$ more you get a brand new motor that will end in another 25 years...

maybe your door springs are broken, and motors having problem opening it because the door is too heavy either the motor is burnt,

Re: Any garage door enthusiasts out there?

Ron you old bugger, I have to give my very best attention for sure, when the $hit hits your fan.

First thought --- Does not appear too expensive as it closes, but does not reverse, but I gather does grunt/try in reverse. The previous post suggesting a balance spring problem makes good sense. Give it a helping hand when you give it the necessary, and observe all of the mechanical stuff involved.

Whatever you can fix it. Don’t panic. Follow your nose. Do not use that big hammer. Contemplate and open one or two. Report your findings here for plan B, which may involve shocking electric stuff. Meantime, howsat for now.

Thanks will be due only when the old girl can lift her skirt.

Old Fart.

Re: Any garage door enthusiasts out there?

My garage door opener snapped a spring a couple months back.

Would go down fine, but was extremely heavy going UP, fighting against the spring wound the other way. The two springs are wound to cancel each other out, and strong enough in both directions to make the door's weight be minimal.

If one breaks, you not only get the full weight of the door, but the counter-force of the opposing spring. A garage door opener will burn it's motor out fighting that much force.

Just as mine did. I had to get the spring replaced, and the motor drive. It just depends if you want another Genie, which IIRC are screw-drive, or some other chain-drive unit. My chain drive unit was about 150$ with new motor, new remotes, and even a new chain and guide which I didn't need to replace.

But if you use the same system, by replacing it with a new unit, you get more remotes as well, as chances are your existing remotes, and your new remotes in the box, will both probably work.

Re: Any garage door enthusiasts out there?

EZ test:

Pull the release so the door goes up and down manually. Observe smoothness of glide during up and down motion, and relative weight of door. If its ok, then discount any problem with spring or rollers.

Then operate motor while door is still disconnected, if it still does not move in reverse, motor is kaput. If it does go in reverse, allow it to go through up and down motions a few times, then reconnect door and try operation with load of door on motor. If it still does not reverse under load, motor is kaput.

Re: Any garage door enthusiasts out there?

Get a belt driven one as opposed to chain... Belt is much quieter which is very handy if your garage is attached to the house

Thumbs down Re: Any garage door enthusiasts out there?

Upon furthur review, a la Google, the problem probably lies within the internal motor circuit board called the sequencer. A replacement for my relic doesn't seem to exist anymore, & if it did they cost around 50-60 bucks. So....I guess it's time to hit Lowes, & dump a coupla' hundred into a new contraption. I may even pay a grunt to install the thing, as retirement has resulted in an extreme case of personal laziness. Thanks to all for commenting upon my delimma - even to certain old farts residing below the equator.
