That price figure is stupid high though. Some one here could still fix it easy peasy. In the end though u end up with a salvage title (no one likes that, especially on a car you wanted to keep as a toy).

Hope it works out.
Since no insurance covered the damage, and the insurance company did not take title, why is it salvage title? As long as the owner signs it back to you, should be clear title?

The pictures of Earl's 93, if I remember correctly, were more damage than this. If you wanted to repair it, Earl may be able to give some insight. In the end, if you fixed it, you may be buying back the car for $4000, worse for the wear.

I have no experience... but I thought salvage titles were forced... (elsewise, no one would accept them?). As a protection measure for prospective buyers. Not just an insurance thing.

I could so easily be completely wrong though. I would like to be enlightened.

What's Earl's user name? When you say buying the car back for $4000 you mean that I would spend that much to repairing it?

'King Earl', see post *17 this thread, be sure to check out his SVX inventory.

Yes, that was what I meant. If you could repair for much less, and wanted to keep the car, that's another story.

I honestly don't know the answer, but who is forcing here? If I wreck something, and I don't ask insurance to fix it because I don't want to, or because I don't have insurance, how would the title be changed to salvage? When it comes time to renew, the owner can select salvage to avoid paying registration fees, or select non-op.

nope. here's what happened to my car back in january:

the insurance company deemed it a total loss and i bought it back for about $800. they cut me a check and i didn't have to surrender the title and have a salvage title reissued. the downside is since the insurance company totalled it, they won't sell me comprehensive or collision insurance on it.

Re: Sold our SVX look what happened...

Ken,

Insurance totalled your car because you were paid damages under collision insurance? Essentually, the insurance company bought your car under policy provision, so insurance owned it, could do as they please with it, and then, you bought it back. Otherwise, insurance would have no say in your damage. The car here is uninsured. As I understand it, the family that bought the car still own the car. Ron

yes, my insurance company paid out the claim under collision insurance. my comment was an attempt to answer zavikan's question that if a car is wrecked, it doesn't automatically get a salvage title.

Re: Sold our SVX look what happened...

About 10 or so years ago I rear-ended a slightly-jacked-up Nissan PU in my Honda Accord. His bumper overrode mine causing similar but more serious damage to the front end. Since it was my fault, and I only had collision coverage, I rebuilt the front end myself. (I paid a body shop to align the frame and do the final painting, but I did the rest of the work.) If insurance had been involved, I'm sure it would have been totaled, but it wasn't, and a salvage title was never issued. I traded it in a year later with a "clean" title. This was Utah-- Wyoming may be similar since we're both in the "Wild wild west".

Re: Sold our SVX look what happened...

Well a BIG thanks to sunvalleyray!! He was able to get me parts to put the SVX back together again. The hood and fender are Claret where the rest of the car is Bordeaux but the neighbors are going to leave it that way for now. I striped the fender so it doesn't stick out as much. It's not perfect but maybe this way when she looks at the car it will be a reminder of what she did. I'm just glad it didn't go to the salvage yard

Re: Sold our SVX look what happened...

Kudos to you and sunvalleyray! BTW: I'm the one that told him where the car was that your claret hood & fender came from-- not trying to take credit since Ray did all the work, but I'm sure glad they were used to save your bordeaux! (they were from a "cash 4 clunkers" car at the local pick-n-pull here in Salt Lake City.) Did he get you a grille, headlight, and radiator too?
