It is not fully seated and slammed up against the flexplate. Pull the trans back out and rebuild the pump you have destroyed Tom |

Re: torque converter issue
this wasnt when it was bolted to the flexplate yet, this was just mounting the tc into the bellhousing b4 raising the tranny

Re: torque converter issue
i dont see how lifting the tranny will make a diff when its just resting on blocks, Can turnthe inner shaft by hand but the out part of the shaft was dead solid, but for the the inner shaft, it can be moved in and out, not sure if thats normal or not...

Re: torque converter issue
can get the tc to spin when u pull it out by a centimeter so i wonder if its seated too far? but the starter wont fit onto it at that point if that helps

Re: torque converter issue
since i can get it to rotate 180 would it be safe to bolt it to the engine and try cranking it over through the drive pulley? or would that break something in the tranny?

Re: torque converter issue
Nope, if it's not turning smoothly either you just don't have it splined in all the way or you did in fact smash your pump (which unfortunately others before you have done and apparantly isn't that hard for the uninitiated to do).

Re: torque converter issue
If I remember correctly you're using some other type of subaru transmission (not svx transmission). Make sure you are using the correct input shaft to match your torque convter too. Not all subaru's use the same torque converter and input shaft. The input shaft installs into the transmission before you install the torque converter. When it is fully seated the o-ring is very close to the outer splined shaft.
During installation there are 3 things which much spline together. The two notches in the pump driveshaft spline with the two tabs of the pump rotor. The splines on the solid outer shaft spline into the stator of the torque converter. The splines on the input shaft spline into the turbine of the torque converter. For some reason people have difficulty getting this right. Putting the transmission in with it wrong always results in breaking the pump. |

Re: torque converter issue
i'm still using the stock svx 4eat, i was inquiring about the other ones incase the tc was messed but its fine, how do you check to make sure the pump isnt smashed?
When i managed to get it to rotate 180 i was turning it left and right till i heard like a poping sound then i could turn it even more but now its at the point where i cant just slide the tc off anymore so would it be splined properly? |

Re: torque converter issue
i'm not sure what to say except I'm not sure what you've broken but I'd be inclined to believe something is broken. I'm not sure what to recomend either. I don't think the pump shaft is long enough to remove it from the torque converter and test the pump with it.
Maybe get the converter back off and pull the input shaft and try to spline it in the turbine and turn it? |

Re: torque converter issue
if the pump is busted, how much would it cost to either rebuild it yourself or get it rebuilt?
