rev..what? rev..rev..oh no...bye bye tranny!!!

so it finally happened the tranny is gone on my 92 LSL. the rest of the car is still solid and i don't want to get rid of it. i got quoted about 5K for a rebuilt installed and nearly fainted. since i know this is a svx downfall (along with warped rotors and wheel bearings) i know a lot of people have dealt with this.

what are my options, and what do you all reccomend? does anyone know any good mechanics in humboldt?

thanks again everyone.

cheers,
mcveigh

5speed/6-speed swop. A little over the 5k for a 6-speed, a little under for a 5-speed. That's without labor.

Options:

1. Buy an Subaru Remanufctured trans for a ton
2. Get your auto rebuilt for a little less than a ton
3. Find a used auto
4. Find a used auto for a 4.11/4.44 swap
5. Swap over to a 5/6 mt

Thats about all I got

Tom

I thought MT swaps didn't cost 5k. I thought they were more like 1.5-2.

Try an non-subaru shop. I had my trans replaced last fall with a rebuilt tranny for 1,725 at a tranny shop not connected with subaru. I called every shop in town and asked if they had ever work on an SVX and for a quote. The shop that had done the most SVX's said they didnt do have the stuff the others said they had to do to fix it, so the cost was way lower than the other shops and it was way less labor hours than he quoted me. I love my tranny guy.

One scary side note about my tranny shop, the ONLY car they have ever had broken into was an SVX and its entire dash was stolen. It was left over night by the costumer in the side lot (something they say not to do. They only park it there for pick up) He was great with my car, he put it in the bay the right after they test drove it and left it there until i picked it up. I really really love my tranny guy.

I'd like to have done the 5 speed swap but my car is getting up there in age, mileage, and has enough problems to make it not really worth it. (not to mention i cant drive a stick!)

Depends on what parts you use and who you go to for the install. For a premiuim 5mt(04+ low mileage WRX trans) it will cost about 4-4.5k all together.
