having Evo'l thoughts

I was out today shopping with the wife, and we happened to be passing near the local Mitsu dealership. I had been reading up on the Evo 9 MR recently, so we stopped by the dealership to see if they had an Evo 9 MR that I could check out. They had a new one and a used one. The used Evo 9 MR has 6k miles on it, and looks perfect. They're asking $30K for it, but I bet I could get it for $28k. Its very tempting, esp since the wife is egging me on. I'd have to sell the SVX though to afford it. I think I'm going to test drive it next week...

Any reason you prefer it over the STi?

Its the temptation of the dark side. :-) More seriously though, I've read zillions of options on people who have owned both cars, and the general concensus is that the Evo is the better sports car. Everyone does say though that the Evo drives a bit rougher than the STi, so I need to find out what that's about.

I've heard that was well but the underdog in me will keep me from ever buying a new Mitsubishi.

I see it more as a temptation from the left side of your brain!

Seriously, the Evo MR is a better car than the STI in almost every measure of performance - braking, handling & acceleration. While the STI has a more compliant ride, if you can live with an Evo get it! You'll have very few regrets!!!

-Chike

P.S. Believe it or not, these comments are coming from a guy who just bought a brand new WRX TR! Why b/c I didn't have 28K+ to spend on a car, and for a 23K performance sedan, the WRX TR has serious bang-for-your-buck. With that said, if I had 30K+ to spend, I would have gotten a Legacy GT Spec B.

You should do good selling your SVX. The Laguna Blue rocks and a 5 speed makes it even more desireable. As for the Evo, I think the front end looks a little better, but the rear end sucks. The STi has a better ride and a much nicer interior. Performance is close. If you have to have a 3 Diamond, regardless of the rivers of red ink, wait for the Evo X. But I can see the temptation to jump now.

the MR is slightly faster and handles better than the STi, but the STi is about $3000 cheaper, if i remember right. $3000 will buy you a Cobb stage 2 and a nice suspension setup, with money to spare.

the low rent interior of the MR would be enough to keep me away - i don't need burlwood and leather, but come on - for a $36,000 car, that interior looks like crap. that's where you'll be spending your time.

IMHO, the EVO X looks MUCH better inside and out. *i* would even consider the X.

having been the proud owner of a few DSMs and having worked on them regulary, i can honestly say mitsu are like a good bottle of wine. Tastes good, expensive, and will be a lot of fun. Just watch out for the headache in the morning(a few years) I myself will never own another mitsu again.

Alan. He's looking at a used MR which he may be able to pick up for 28-29K. The money argument is therefore irrelevant in this scenario...

-Chike

P.S. I also agree with Tigershark Mychailo. You should get a pretty penny if you sell your SVX.

a cheaper STi can be made even better with the money saved by going with some aftermarket bolt-ons.

If he can afford to get a 28-29K Evo MR, then I'd say get it. In every thread on NASIOC or Clubwrx regarding whether to get an Evo MR or STI the majority of respondents always pick the Evo MR. Why b/c it's the better car.

If you can afford the MR, get it. Aftermareket mods aren't fool proof and can cause erratic times. Go to any EVO vs WRX shootout and you'll see what I mean. Heavily modded STIs that make 300-350whp+ on the dyno can't get out of the 13's.

There are now over 6-8 confirmed timeslips of stock Evo MR's running 12's. The Evo MR will also kick an STI around the road course. Besides, this is an Evo thread. If you want to talk about STIs, start another one...
