Welcome

MartyMcFly,

Welcome to the network. I am not sure if you have been welcome yet. I like the nick. Kind of fit the SVX in some ways.

If you have any comments or questions, let us know.

After spending a couple hours talking to Delorean guys (at Autofest 2001) and comparing the styling of the cars, we found a surprising number of similiarities.

There was also a Delorean owner with the vanity plate "McFLY" -- was he the one who was going to find an SVX?

At any rate, welcome "Marty." We're happy you're here.

McFly is a totally cute name, love the movies. But please guys, no comparing the SVX to the DeLorean.

I know, I know, I have a mid-engined plastic car out the back myself, and I also know any DeLorean owners I ever met were the best types you could meet, but if you must compare the SVX, stick to a proper coupe with ability like the Renault Alpine A610 or a Maserati 3500 or something couth.

No offense to Delorean owners. Somebody has to like them!

Joe

Comparisons were done on design merits only, Joe. Seeing as how our friend GG designed the two.

It *was* interesting to see similarities in the interior layouts and how the SVX interior was something of a refinement of some of the nuances of the DeLorean.

OK, I get the point. My point about the DeLorean as a styling exercise would be the car was so naff it was crying out for somebody to add a nuclear powered dustbin to the back window. Our friend GG did not cover himself in glory in all his designs.

He designed the Fiat Panda, a car that makes wheelbarrows look elegant. He designed the Lexus Toyota GS 300 [you probably have another name for it] a car with stacks of ability and the grace and balance and charm of an Aard Vark. I could go on, but God knows who I would be offending. It is interesting to follow design themes through a series or a range of cars from a styling house all right.

However, the SVX is a study in bulbous and purposeful elegance. The DeLorean looks like it was designed by a welder in a scrap yard using flat panels for inspiration. Not my cup of tea.

Just for the record: my all-time favourite body shape [on wheels!!] is the Pininfarina designed Ferrari 250 Lusso 1963. Anyone care to raise my bet?

Joe
Ron? You out there?

Yes, the Panda is atrocious. So are some of the Seat designs and I shudder in shame at some of the TRUCKS he's designed, but, what the heck. Ya gotsa pay da bills!!

I kinda like the Delorean body style, but, I'm a wedgy kinda guy. I still want a TR8 (almost bought one after my Spitfire went bye-bye) to add to my stable, but, need my second SVX first.

That's how I feel about the Pontiac Aztec. It looks like something Mr. T welded up on an episode of 'The A Team'. Hopefully it hasn't infected your side of the pond.

I just checked "Marty's" profile. He's from:

Leibnitz, Austria

So, I don't guess he was the one at Autofest.

Great stuff. I ski in Austria.

Welcome Marty, and if you do own a DeLorean, I take it all back. They are the fastest most elegant thing on two wheels!!

I'll re-state my contention on the Aztec: It was taken from the hands of the design department, by marketing before they had time to sand the clay model. Marketing must've been on a deadline and did not allow design to smooth out the lines before they took it (Marketing people are like that -- I know, I were one). Now, they've introduced the "Vibe." Marketing took the clay model of the Aztec back to design and said, "you can sand it now." Which they did -- but only the rear end -- then, marketing was back to snatch the model before they got the front end sanded correctly -- and the Vibe was born.

Now, I can't wait 'til the 2004 Model when design finally gets to sand the front of the Aztec as well as the rear and we end up with something that looks like it should.

The other day, I was at local Boders and reading through a book on concept cars. There was a huge section for our friend GG. I saw a car he did for Lotus called E____ something or the other. Initially, I thought it was the SVX prototype. 1/2 windows and all. You should check it out.
