Trouble Seeing (need new glasses?)
Has anyone else noticed over the last few years that oncoming headlights are much more blinding? Sometimes I'd swear they were on high beams, yet I've seen them lowered as they approach coming around a curve so I know that they aren't actually high beams.
I'm just trying to decide whether I'm developing some kind of "night blindness" or need new glasses or whether headlamps are actually getting brighter and giving me more glare. I love driving at night. The roads are practically empty of traffic so I can go faster on the autobahn But when on local roads with one lane in each direction, I am really starting to have trouble seeing when oncoming cars approach and pass me. As long as there's nobody coming at me, I can see just fine. I thought night blindness means trouble seeing in general at night. So, is it me and my eyes getting old, or newer brighter headlights that are the culprits? I'll probably schedule an eye check-up anyway, but I'm just wondering if anyone else is having the same kind of problem. P.S. Yes, I keep both my glasses and the windshield clean, so it isn't something as simple as dirty glass |

Yes, I have noticed that too. The only trouble is that I am getting older too!

I would have to say the lights are getting brighter. You can see a pattern with certain vehicles being brighter than others. Also most new vehicles use little to no "flutes" in the headlight assembly allowing more light to pass through. (At least that's my theory)
My parents have a 2002 Jetta and I've never been flashed by so many people thinking I had the brights on as when I drove that car. The lights were aligned fine (probably lower than I have mine on the SVX).

I've noticed the same thing and wondered about the contribution of advancing years. I'm 48 and have uncorrected vision good enough to pass the state's driver's licensing requirements, but have noticed my near vision is getting alarmingly fuzzy of late.
I'm bothered by folks who insist on running their fog (and/or offroad) lamps perpetually, just because they think it looks cool (I guess). At night, SUVs around here look like spacecraft from the film, "Close Encounters of the Third Kind." I wonder if they have a clue how annoying their light show can be to other drivers. dcb |

Yes. The lights are definitely brighter. The trouble is that even if they are correctly aligned so that they don't shine directly at you, the glare from them will close up the pupils of your eyes and affect your night-vision.
I asked an optician about this because I have fairly poor night-vision and he said that is common for people who are short-sighted. Something about the wavelengths of the light. Also, people who have laser eye surgery often have permanently bad night vision afterwards.

You know what I think after reading all your replies? You are just a bunch of people whose pride not allowing you to admit you are developing age blindness. Have mercy on your SVX's, let someone young drive them like your kids and go switch to some cheap 350Z's ( SVX's values are higher , you can't say otherwise or you are traitors... )
So pls stop blaming the "new improved cars lighting thing..." and go grab some glasses and wear them on...

I'll second the lights getting brighter. I'm almost 18 and I'll tell you, some cars have lights that are blinding! The lights on my Legacy are very poor (I mean..I don't even get flashed with my highbeams on) compared to other cars. Driving around my '03 Grand Prix...I get flashed all the time and the lights are aligned correctly.
So, don't just blame it on age..blame it on cars with insanely bright lights
