Chevrolet Cosworth Vega.Which have been known to run for as long as several thousand miles before the aluminum cylinder head cracked.

another car ahead of its time

dont think anyone under 30 even knows about these cars..
what cool is how Chevy put a Cosworth designed
motor into their econo-box, to go against of all cars
of the era, the Pinto and Gremlin etc and even the
V8s of the day.
Check out some of the specs and options:

IT HAS THE TWIN CAM, 16 VALVE ENGINE, 5 SPEED TRANS, FACTORY MAG WHEELS, BRAND NEW TIRES, ORIGINAL RADIO, FACTORY TACH, POSI TRACTION REAR END, FUEL INJECTION, FACTORY HEADERS, ELECTRONIC IGNITION

Cant wait to see how it does at speeds over 100 in top gear

Yikes! The Vega...one of the nightmares John DeLorean had to deal with at GM. I understand that GM lost big time on those things.

For a econo car I'd take a Vega over a Pinto, or Gremlin any day...kind of a Camero Mini-Me of it's day....many people droped small block V-8's in them which made for one bad little car....

I remember when these black beauties with the gold pinstripes and wheels made their debut. They were really expensive for their time.

Back in 1976, the price of a Camaro was $5500 and the Cosworth Vega was $6900. A new Corvette would have cost you only 700 more!

John DeLorean, Chev's GM when the Vega was introduced, [thanks to the success of the GTO] hated the Vega and in his book, "On A Clear Day You Can See General Motors". Called the Vega a poor design.

He said "Chevy engineers were ashamed of the engine." The engine was also very expensive to build. I believe the Cosworth Vega had more than its share of problems caused by the poorly engineered mechanical fuel injection system. And many Vega engines suffered from poorly designed compression seals that often cause the engines to self-destruct sometimes in matter of months. But in fairness some people were lucky with the engine and got years of service out of it.

I remember reading in one car magazine that they had driven a Vega and it actually split in half after going over some train tracks. The Vega would be far from having an entry on my must have list. But it did look better then the Pinto and Gremlin. A buddy of mine had a Gremlin right after high school. It had a GM straight 6 in it. Poor mpg and no acceleration what so ever. He got it for like $500, but it ran while he redid his other car.

not buying it because of the vega body or chassis, but
because mainly of the powerplant they put in it.
Thats the one thing it seems most people are overlooking.
A similar pkg was put together in the 80s with fwd GMs using the Quad 4 motor, another very rare and unique
combination used only for a yr or so.
