when I was in high school, a friend of mine got a loaner from the chevy dealer while his car was in for service. he put a dry nitrous kit on it and we took it to the track that night. It was a blast, especially with the window sticker still attached.

well, i just read your story and i have to say, it sucks to be you.

however, i'd say it's pretty nice to see the dealership owning right up to their mistake and doing their best to make it up to you. i hear way too many stories like this where the dealership flat-out denys any responsibility and the customer is left high and dry. props to them for trying to make it right.

if they're gonna have the whole engine apart to rebuild it, now might be a good time to switch to low-compression pistons (if such things exist)

i took the impreza back in today for the fourth time with the same problem. i wonder if the the lemon laws apply to a car out of warranty. probably not. hopefully, they will kill it and have to buy it from me.

Stories like this scare me away from getting my car serviced by a dealer. Their service departments are often swamped and the mechanics are often working very quickly to meet strict time guidelines for repairs.

Most shops will hurry whether they are busy or not. Mechanics get paid by how long the book says the job is supposed to take. The less time they take, the more repairs they can do, the more money they get. They get paid for 4 hours even if it only take them one.

Yeah, and allow me to be the first to say here that system sucks. It means that whether the mechanic takes his time and does it right, or forgets to put the oil filter on and ruins the engine, the customer pays the same amount. People deserve a choice between price and quality - under the current system that choice is made for them.

And I think that blows.

Yeah the system does suck, so i should tell them that a 5 spd swap with my new motor would help cure the emotional damage...

OK, let's break this down logically...

This dealership did a total reaseal on your motor, I guess head gaskets and everything? And then they delivered it back to you on the service drive with the underskirt hanging off the bottom of the car. Hmm... that's a weird one there, and the service advisor would have freaked out and put it back in the shop to recheck everything if he had half a brain.

OK... so you say they "forgot" to put an oil filter on the car? So how did it get from the shop to the service drive? The moment the engine fired up it would have jetissoned 6 quarts of oil directly onto the pavement. If you were able to drive even 6 inches without the rear tires losing traction on oil, then it definitely had an oil filter on it.

Next, you say the underside of the hood had oil on it. There is NO WAY a missing oil filter, oil pan, or any other part on the bottom of the motor could throw oil onto the hood. There's a big object in the way, the MOTOR. Oil does not make turns in space as it flies.

In fact, there are VERY few ways that you can get a Subaru motor to throw oil upwards, and all of them that I can think of involve either major missing gasketry, or a thrown rod which "windows" the block on the upper side. I have seen a turbo'd 2.5RS run and drive that had a 6 inch hole in the top of the block and a flailing rod free within it. The guy drove it 150 miles to the dealership and it was still making crazy power on the remaining three cylinders. It threw oil everywhere, but not anywhere near as much as you are suggesting.

So anyway, whatever actually happened to your car probably had nothing to do with the oil pan or the oil filter.... it sounds much more major than that, and indicative of more than just simple negligence on the part of the dealership.

I would go ask questions until you understand what exactly has failed on your vehicle, and why. If nothing else, you need to understand the issue and failure at hand in order to bring a proper case against the dealership in the event that it becomes apparent that their actions caused this issue.

Good luck!
