HD

Hi everyone, Seems to be a little interest in HD. The biggest problem I see is that most of our fellow Americans don't have a clue about whats going to happen in 2006 when the stations that are broadcasting the NTSC signal will have to give back the frequencies that those channels now broadcast on. Your TIVO or Replay will not work on HD. Both Dish and Direct TV have satelite recievers with a hard drive recorder built in so you can time shift as you did with NTSC. On the 921 reciever from Dish you can watch one channel and record another etc and it has a plug that you can record to a HD vcr. And Manofmayo you saw with your own eyes the video version of garbage in, garbage out. Take care, BOBB

Nope, NTSC is gone Dec 31, 2006.

licensed TV stations were required to start broadcasting ATSC in may of 2003. A lot of stations missed the deadline and now there are programs to help smaller stations buy the equipment necessary to broadcast ATSC. They need cameras for local news, new editing equipment, new broadcast towers, etc.

The FCC is very anxious to get back the VHF/UHF bandwidth that they have been letting TV use for close to free so they can re-license it to private communication carriers for 100's of millions of dollars.

I didn't need a tuner, so I only have a monitor. I have a home theater PC that has the ATSC tuner and recording. It is a MIT MDP-120 MyHD system.

my Tivo was $99, with 35 hours of storage (plenty for me). the HD Tivo is $$$$$. i'll wait for the prices to drop. considering you can get a 160Gig harddrive for less than $100 now, prices for HD Tivo's will come down considerably in the next year or so. i'm going to be patient for once, and not buy the latest and greatest.

Hi Doug, Some guys say all your electronic stuff will end up in one box and one display. I think you will see some of this kind of thing, but it has to make sense in order for it to become popular. Oh yeah, WHAT A GEEK! Take care, BOBB

Good Lawd! How did we ever survive yoot' with a knob that had 13 channels that sometimes worked on 4 of 'em, for maybe 8 hours a day?

Now I remember.....We went outside & played touch football, Cowboys 'n Indians, climbed trees & skipped flat rocks on the pond.

Sigh.....Ron.

I remember playing Cowboys 'n Indians. For some reason I always ended up the horse that all the Cowboys 'n Indians always try to tether and beat with a stick. I wonder why they never called it Cowboys, Indians, and Horsies?

understood - i guess what i meant was, given the increasing capacity and shrinking price of current hard drives, an HD Tivo at a reasonable cost will probably be available in the not too distant future. i'm not sure what i was thinking - i know there are pricey HD-DirecTV receivers, but i guess there really aren't any HD Tivos available at the moment. right?

The Direct TV units use TIVO. I believe the Dish units use technology from Replay. You are right in that other mfg will make HD recorders and you can use the hard drive in you PC or MAC. You might have to add an external drive to get enough capacity for HD. For example the Dish 921 has a 240 gig hard drive, but you only have 25 hours of recording time. My Dish 508 reciever has a 70 hour recording time for SD. The unit I replaced I purchased in 1998 and it had 12 hours of recording time! Take care, BOBB

Back to the thread

Hi everyone, Contrary to somr previous posts I find standard defination {SD} on a HD monitor to be at least as good , or better, as the pictures I recieved on a similar sized SD set of equal qoality. This, I find to be true on broadcast and satilite. Take care, BOBB

P/S Harry, Glad to see your interest in smart ladies. These, of course, are the only kind we have on this site. "B"

480p

Hi Nick, 480p is considered SD in the digital format. The advantage in 480p is the fact that the whole picture is presented on the screen at once, instead of scanning the odd and then the even lines. Or it might be even and then odd.. This iliminates artifacts, so you get a cleaner sharper picture. Take care, BOBB
