Car shakes when brakes SOS!
Hi
yes this topic was here before but i want to bring it back, as its my major problem ever! When i drive over 110kph i feel some shaking.. its more in steering wheel, but also acceleration pedal and car as whole thing... also when i brake its just awefall, i just wanna cry... it shakes so badly, especially in steering wheel... i ve had my wheels ballanced. and they were ballanced perfectly... my alignment.. well thread on tyres was even after 20,000kms so i guess its nto the problem and cant be one... that guys, who ballanced the wheels, said that it also can be the suspension itself (few months ago i hit the curb at speed of 60kph... the funny stupid island in the middle of the road :s ) and i think after that i had shaking after 110kph but breaking was ok... but now it sux. so pls help me here, as its just disgrace plus it can be hell as dangerous! wating for ur advices... especially if u experienced the same.. cheers |

The 1st place to start looking is the brakes. The discs are prone to warping and give the symptoms described. Check the tightness of your wheel nuts too, as overtightening can make the discs warp.
Do a search as this topic has been covered previously

seems like its suspension problem... but still what can happen to rotors and how can i check it? anything specific and geez leave the nuts alone they are proper tight, and wheels are fine and its not the easy fix, thats why i ask... thx |

Is the fluid contaminated and heating up too quickly?

what do u mean immortal?
how can i check that? and what does it to do with shaking? oh in addition, taking out abs fuse did not solve the problem... i think shaking at 110kph and shaking when breaking at any speed are relative ... |

I still suspect your brakes. A specialist can check the run-out of your rotors. Also check that your calipers are sliding smoothly.

Contaminated fluid will heat up very quickly and fade the brakes. The front end on mine used to shake violently when braking from high speed. Changing the fluid got rid of that.
If the fluid is not clear it is already somewhat contaminated. I'd bleed out the brake system and start with fresh fluid before replacing any parts.

Shaking
If the car shakes without applying the brakes, can it be the brakes?
If the car shakes and you apply the brakes the car will shudder as the shake is transfered to the brake. An old guide was that if the car started shaking between 80 and 100 kmh and disappeared over 100 kmh, then that indicated front wheel/end problems. If it starts over 100kmh and disappears over 120kmh then rear wheel/end problems. Did you damage a rim when you hit the kerb? Try swapping front wheels to the back (same side) and see if the problem starts at a lower speed. If so then check rims for damage. Also check if directional tyres are on correctly. If all is OK then I would suspect that you damaged some thing when you hit the kerb. Hope it's a simple as the first part. Kenn |

to immortal: the fluid is kinda brownish and not the tasty color :s
what color should it be? to Kenn: i got another set of wheels, and i had front wheels ballanced. same as it was. Starts shaking at 110kph ... did not go faster then 120 as if i get fine i can sell my car to pay it off... :s ok when i brake its still same shaking but way harder.. if i brake hard, like from 100 to zero, then shaking is gone... or really light but if i apply brakes firmly then im in trouble! like today it just scared the &hit out of me! to immotal again: how can bad fluid cause that bad braking? also i mite ve damaged the suspension and now it goes worse or something.. no idea how can i check that tho |

I agree with Andy - have your brakes checked ASAP. It sounds to me like you have very badly warped rotors. I'd also check front suspension for slop - rods, ball joints, etc.
But if it shakes badly under braking, then I think 90% of the members here will say the same thing: your rotors are warped.

if it shakes without putting on the brakes, then there's a list of things to check that I've seen as problems (and I may repeat other's advice, while still neglecting other possible causes).
tire balance tire out of round strut strut mount ball joints tie rods steering links/bushings mounting of wheel/rotor to hub (clean and check not skewed) I've been in a car (but not a SVX) that had some shake, then when the brakes went on it was scary - turned out to be the tie rods & ball joints - I'd give those a careful check. |

There are places that can check them on your car, or you can remove them and take them to a napa, or pep boys and they will check them for a small fee.
