Full time 4WD?
IS the SVX a full time 4WD (I have a 1992 LSL)
I had trouble pulling out of the snow, in some occasions I had to have my uncle push so I could get out of the snow in a level parking lot. It wasnt alot of snow either. Could something be wrong with my 4WD??? Also as I was trying to pull out of the snow I noticed that only the front wheels would spin. Are all four wheeld supposed to spin??? Thanks guys |

you've got a problem
you should get the car checked out as all four wheels should spin when slip is detected. Sorry

Check the fuse box and make sure the FWD fuse is not in.

If it's not the fuse, it's usually the " single wire solenoid " at the tailshaft of the transmission, book time is around 6 hours, the gasket and seal are cheep, the solenoid is around $125.00. The clutch plates are around $300.00, but only replace them if they are worn.

Yeah, there's something wrong with your car. Does the 'power' light blink sixteen times when you start the car? If not, then the transfer clutch is probably just totally worn out.
Sorry.

Thanks for all your help guys
where's the best place to buy those parts if I need to replaced them? Does any one know a good mechanic within the Norwalk,CT 06854 area? |

I do not know a mechanic in Norwalk. I replaced the transfer valve solenoid assy myself. First I checked the transfer pressure and there was none. That is a sure sign the solenoid assy is bad. If the transfer pressure is good then the transfer clutch plates are worn. To fix this the exhaust has to come down and then the drive shaft. After that the back of the tranny has to come off. I hope it works out for you.

I'm up in northwest CT...if you're up to the trip there's my mechanic, Hank Schieb, Schieb's garage...(860) 379-4363 and Center Subaru in Torrington, CT does a good job.

I think taking an SVX to anywhere but a Subaru Dealership for service is a big big mistake... That's just me though.

But I think that there are an overwhelming number of repairs that can be performed by a competent and (above all) careful mechanic.

center diff
in a manual or an automatic?

center diff
If its an automatic, center diff bind can be caused by the front/rear clutch drum wearing and not allowing the f/r clutch discs and shims to move freely.Or if the single wire solenoid goes bad, and wont bleed off pressure and the f/r clutch plates have full pressure to keep them from slipping, hence 4wd and not awd.
If its a 5 speed manual and its locked up,either the f/r tires are different sizes, or the silicone filled center diff locked up, perhaps the first one ever to do so. |

Would drum wear look like 4 grooves worn into the inner drum? If so would fileing the grooves out be a good or bad fix?
