Unhappy Transmiision Gone

Well, got the report back from the shop and my transmission needs replacing. Mechanic said that the differential is wrecked and the transfer clutches are all burned up. $3,500 to fix it all.

So for now it will sit all winter and maybe in the spring I will try to get it running again. Otherwise I will just be parting it out. I love this car when it is running good. But the cost of a tranny maybe too much for a car with 190K on it.

Anyone know of a source for a transmission? Is it okay to buy a used tranny? Should I look to rebuild my own?

Let me know if you can. Thanks.

Sorry to hear about your car. I know it was a great disappointment to me when my tranny died after 133k.

I replaced my tranny with a used one by myself. It was certainly cheaper. A lot of work is involved, but it's a pretty rewarding repair to do on your own.

My old tranny is still sitting on my garage floor. I plan on attempting to rebuild it by myself, but since the new one is still working great, I'm in no rush. That's especially true since the price of the rebuild parts is around $1500.

As for whether or not it's worth it, only you can determine that. What kind of condition is the rest of the car in? Do you expect a lot of other things to go wrong once your tranny is replaced?

If you are using it as your only car, it is probably not worthwhile because of the age and mileage.

If it is your pleasure vehicle, go ahead and get it fixed or convert it to a five speed for a few more dollars.

These cars are not for the faint of wallet or someone looking for 99.9% reliability. They are getting older and quirkier every year.

Good luck with whatever you decide.

I will suggest you keep the car and fix it.
