Here's an odd one... 25Kg of pure Carnauba Wax
I have the opportunity to acquire 25Kg of pure #1 Brazilian Carnauba Wax from a wax distributor for purposes of "formula development".
As you know, the really expensive Zymol formulas get up to in the 80% range of "pure #1 Brazilian Carnauba".... and they cost several thousand dollars a bottle for the secret formula. Whaddya think? Should I get 25Kg of this crap to test out on the car? I guess I can heat it up and apply it hot, then buff to shine. Thoughts? Last edited by Porter; 04-28-2003 at 07:55 AM. |

Wow, you've got too much time on your hands
if you're making your own wax, Porter!
I'm all for buying things that are a good deal, but........ Todd

Haha, no day job at the moment as I'm moving to Atlanta in August and doing freelance AV work until then. This should be an interesting project.
My volume of free time is the primary reason I've gotten around to doing all this suspension stuff too... I just didn't have the spare time before! |

My suggestion would be to go to this forum
http://www.autopia.org/forums/index.php and ask the question. These guys/gals (several thousand) are all vehicle detail geeks (meant in a nice way). free to join and post, etc, much like this forum |

I'd be happy to join in your "formula development" experiment.

i understand that one can't use "pure" carnuba, ya gotta cut it. period. also, i am one of the probably few who are not fans of zymol. when i've used it i found the shine stays for about a month and then you're back at it. i have better things to do each weekend.

Yes, I agree, you need to cut it, pure carnuba wax would be like putting Hair removal wax all over your car. you would end up with the first SVX Flypaper.
Need to cut it with some very clean solvent, and if posible, H2O. Plus 25k is a Sh@*load of wax, probably about 5 gallons or so. How much do you think all that Carnuba wax weighs?

I'd say it weighs around 25Kg.
Hahah.. that works out to around 55lbs. Yes, of course I'm going to cut it. Pure Carnauba would be impossible to apply, and you'd have to heat it up to 180deg. before you could apply it. It would be nuts. I'm working on some formulations now, looks like silicone will be a prominent additive, as will water and possibly a small amount of mineral spirits. |

you would make so much money if you could make a carnuba wax that could be applied in direct sunlight and wouldn't powder after it's applied in sunlight on a hot car. that is your challenge, it would be the most popular wax ever, if it still held up like the carnuba, but could be applied that easily

Glad to see most of you were paying attention, I hoped to catch someone out there.
So what do you think the volume of 25Kgs of Carnuba wax would be?

I got the wax today.... LOL! Obviously my contact at the distributor had a slip on the keyboard... This is 0.25 Kg of wax! Not 25Kg!! I started laughing out loud when I saw this little box... I emailed him and he was like, oh man did I write 25? Too funny! The wax is cool, it's like little slippery chips that break very easily... it's much softer than I expected. |

So I guess 25kgs of Caruba actually weighs 0.25kgs over there?
