The ECU holds the N and P pins high at 5V, the Inhibitor switch pulls that input low(no voltage) for P or N. If both P and N inputs are high, the ECU assumes that the car is in gear. Harvey.

Harvey I agree that the ECU thinks the car is in gear but the ECU decides to start engine based on the engine spining over. In my opinion my SVX takes about 30 seconds longer to start then the ones with Auto but it still starts no problem. I think the N & P pulling the ECu low has more to do with the idle etc then the actual starting of the engine.

Shameless self-ingratiating bump...
Work is about to begin, and I am unlikely to touch a damned spanner due to my lack of proximity to the car. I am employing the services of another SVX owner with a lot more experience fiddling with gearboxes than I. I am sacrificing lug nuts, surclips and transmission fluid to the car gods.
