Draining Rear Differential

A stupid question -- what size tool do I need to remove and reinstall the drain and fill plugs on the rear differential?

Thanks for any and all help.

If I remember right, the extension on a 3/8 drive fits it. Be sure the top plug can be loosened before you take out the bottom plug. That way you know you can get fluid back in ok.

Thanks for that advice.

I found that a 3/8 drive extension was too small, and a 1/2 in drive extension was also a little too loose.

So, I took some 1/2 inch square steel bar stock (available at any Home Depot/Lowe's), cut off a 2 to 3 inch length, popped it in a 5/8 inch socket (3/8 in drive), and used my breaker bar and ratchet to loosen and retighten both plugs. Worked really well. -- Joe
