Vaz 2101. I was exaclty 1 month unborn when my grandpa purchased the 83 model. It was beautiful........ at that time, and very expencive too.

It had no luxury at all, drove like a tank, and with only 1.2L, 78hp, engine was very uneconomical. However, it was a russian car, and my Granpa had it for almost 15 years. Unfortunatelly you probably can't find one here, in US, unless you go to Canada. Fiat is very similar to it. (Vaz 2101 was build from Fiat model)

nik

Nik, I always thought that the car you've shown was a Russian built Fiat 128 called the Lada. I'm not familiar with the Vaz nameplate.

Spacebo, Ronovitch.

We used to double date in that car alot and IMHO it had the best back seat of any car in which I've ever ridden. That includes my dad's Sedan deVille.

The DS-21 had the air-oil suspension on a car with a 124 inch wheelbase. I'll bet it rode almost as good as a '52 Nash Airflite.
Just exactly what were you riding in the back seat anyway, Larry?

Ron (softly sprung).

Really? Well, the new version of VAZ was called Lada. How new? Starting from about 95, ( i am just guessing here), because what I used to call Lada is VAZ 2106. This is just a technical name for them. The earlier models were called Zuguly, and VAZ is short for Volgovskiy Avtomobilnuy Zavot.

However, there are a bunch of them starting from Vaz 2101 (shown on the picture), 2102 was the vagon, 2103, resedisgned 2101. Then 2106, or just "shesterka" had different engine and was again redesigned, and had a name "Lada".

I am not sure why they were called Lada, my Dad said that they were called like that for when they were built to sell abroad, but otherwise I always called it Zuguly. (a broad name for all starting from 2101 to 2121)

Well, Bill, you'll just have to give her a nice Freedom Kiss to make up. (Better brush first).

Nik,

I thought we we only in the twenty first century. Did I sleep for 100 years ala Rip Van Winkle. If I did my SVXi are over 100 years old and qualify for antique status.

Ron is really, really old, now.

Weren't the early Ladas the ones with the infamous key scandal? They exported a boatload of them to Poland and when they unloaded them the inspector found that every key fit every lock.

I understand they're great little cars.. let me look for a clip I have of a Lada running the quarter in 11 seconds... hang on I'll find it.

Here's the newest Lada... check this baby out:

I'm still looking for the race footage...

Here's a quick one... Lada vs Mazda RX3... I think the Lada loses but not by much, and they are MOVING.

Nice! Cool Vid, although I don't think that russian Ladas are that quick. It might have been a riced out one. I like the new one, on the show.
