Alan-

If going with the WRX, I've read it is best to stick with the Auto tranny. They are having really bad problems with the 5 speed manual gearboxes eating themselves. Something like 5,600 warranty claims. There is a TSB on the issue recommending dealers deny owners warranty claims because the gearbox distruction is due to 'enthusiastic driving' but many owners claim they never did anything to warrant the breaking of their trannys. Also, subaru has discontinued almost all the internal parts of the trannys on the WRX making it impossible to fix if it eats itself. Many owners feel this is because Subaru is in the process of redesigning the gearbox. Might be best to wait till 04 if you're itchin' for a manual.

actually, i'd be getting an auto anyway. its really going to be the wife's car they had an auto on the lot, and the salesman made the mistake of telling us that they have a hard time selling the autos. that means i'll beat him up on the price.
Subaru just can't get the transmission thing right, can they?

The VDC Video doesn't do justic for the car. You have to take it out in real life to see what that can do. How many cars can make a U turn at 45mph on a hair pin turn without loosing control?

you've never driven with my wife, have you? you know how some people in the passenger seat get nervous and hit the imaginary brake pedal? well when she's driving, i hit the imaginary gas pedal. "c'mon...GAS!"

i just test drove the WRX today. WOW! fun little beastie! i'd recommend driving one. why couldn't they have some stylish looks, though? i think of the ugly duckling (with an attitude problem). i was suprised that a Legacy GT is just $1000 less than the WRX. hmmmmm.......

I'd avoid a WRX. Why? Purely because of the people who drive them. I live in a college town and all the rich little preppy boys are now driving around in their WRXs thinking they're the shiznit. Bah. I don't want to be associated with those tools. Legacy GT all the way. :P

Get the WRX. GT looks better but yoiu can mod the WRX (impreza RS is even better) more. The Legacy GT has the compression ratio of 12:1 vs. the 8 or 9 :1 on the WRX/Impreza RS.

Think of things you can do. Honey, I just got you a 10 second car.

As much as i think the WRX is an ugly little tin can of a car, I really resent that comment. J/K of course.

You confuse me sometimes Lwin. First you say get the Outback VDC over the WRX then you say get the WRX. Did I miss something.

I think you have a typo on the compresion ratio of the Legacy. There is not a car offered for sale by a major maker that has a compression ratio of 12:1. The WRX would have a lower CR due it's turbocharged engine, but the RS, a non-turbocharged car, would not have or need the reduced CR. It would seriously reduce the horsepower.

Love the Outback VDC sedan and words cannot describe the handling it displays. It has been in California the past 3 months, from Palm Springs at 119 degrees through the mountains and everywhere in between. paved roads, dirt roads, no roads.

Drove it non-stop across the country in three days. La Jolla, CA to Santa Fe, NM (890 miles) the first day, Santa Fe to St. Louis, MO (1150 miles) the second day and St. Louis to Baltimore (870 miles) the third day.

The car performed flawlessly no matter how hard I pushed it. As I said before, I have taken the VDC around curves and grades at speeds I wouldn't even dream of attempting in the SVX. That says a lot when you look at the height and ground clearance. The VDC circuitry is always on by default. There is a button on the dash to switch it off.

legacy vs WRX

I'd go for the Legacy, how many times will the need for speed come up compared to the need for comfort. Not that the WRX isn't comfortable. Plus I've driven more then one WRX and when you get a good one life is good, but when you might get one with noticable turbo lag it's not the fun it used to be.

i thought the WRX seats were very comfortable - nice bolsters. the lag wasn't anything like what i was expecting from hearing all the reviews. more oomph from an automatic than i was expecting, too. maybe it one of those good ones that come out of the factory every so often.

I'd take the VDC, then the Impreza RS then the Legacy GT. Unless the Legacy is the B4 or the Blitzen.
