I too have to rate IBM as #1 in notebooks. I've used IBMs exclusively for ten years. I have clients that buy the cheap stuff like Sony or Compaq Presarios and have nothing but problems. Problems with hardware failing, problems with road durability and problems with drivers and compatibility. I have never had a single problem with any of my IBM laptops.

I work a lot w/computers and have had pretty good exp. w/Dell and IBM laptops. I tend to prefer the design of the Dell's and they seem to come with more consumer-friendly (rather than business-friendly) features--depends on what you're looking for.

Have you seen the "refurbished systems" on Dell's website? They have the same warranty as the new ones, but are usually much cheaper. Only downfall is you can't customize them, but many are fully loaded.

I know this seems to have been hashed out already, but it seems a reasonable deal... though to be honest with you a little expensive for what it does.

Really, the choice of laptop will depend on its "mission", i.e. what you want to do with it. Few people really need the latest and greatest P4's, especially in laptops. Hell, I consider myself a huge power user, yet I am quite happy with a used Dell Lattitude CPx 650 (650Mhz) with 384MB of RAM running Windows 2000; does everything I need it to and was cheap ($500... we sell them so I got it less than that...) Damn thing's rock solid and runs everything I've thrown at it. Okay, so I upgraded the HD to a 20GB so I could store some MP3's, but that's about it.

Just my 2c worth...

BTW... the laptop looks (though it's hard to tell with the picture resolution) like a Centurion product... they produce laptops for several manufacturers including Toshiba.

What I need is for my desktop to be easily portable.
I need a laptop for some slight video editing and graphics design, all while playing MP3s, SHNs and possibly downloading at the same time.

When I won't be using it for work, I'm sure I will probably play a few graphic intensive games, and be listening to music as well .
I can save alot of power use by just single tasking, but , you know how that goes.

I know i can get away with a 1.8 ghz pent 4, but have to at least have a 64mb
graphics card with 4x AGP.
Also I would need some decent memory.

I know they make laptops that are very powerful and reliable, I just need to find one that suits my needs.

It is a good idea of trying it for 30 days and then returing it. Do that. You might like the laptop. Although, you will lose some $$ on shipping.

I am glad i could help.
