I'm not a Mac fan, but installing a Mac Mini in the dash would be so butt-simple. For that reason alone I would have considered it if I hadn't already done something else.
Mini-PCs have been available for years now. You can even get PCI computers. Yeah, an additional computer that fits in a PCI slot. They've always been kinda spendy and always had yesterday's technology, but they're reasonably fast and normally don't cost an arm and a leg. They have always been proprietary units and feature-barren. I use WinAmp 5 on a Win2000 platform. Simple. I put a shortcut to WinAmp in the startup directory and turned on hibernate support. That's all. WinAmp is scalable and that makes it work pretty well. I've thought about navigation software and other goodies, but for me, the desire just isn't there. I strongly advise against the use of used hard drives. My first four hard drives all failed in less than ten days. They were all used. The very first new drive I purchased has lasted many months now. (Or maybe springing the extra ten bucks for the super-duper extended warranty and insurance is why it's still working.) Laptop hard drives don't seem to work any better or last any longer. They're just smaller and cost more. I've heard of people who've mounted their drives to speaker boxes, next to the big magnets, vibrating away like crazy. Even these drives have lasted for years. Some people swear that they must only be mounted horizontally, and other swear they should be vertical. Some people claim they're extremely temperature sensitive, and others claim it makes no difference. (Mine has been down to 18 degrees and well into the hundreds, far too hot to touch.) The jury's out, but I think it doesn't matter with a few possible, but undocumented exceptions. |

Yummy!
Nano-ITX I can see building it all in a little double-DIN sized chassis with a 7" monitor in the front that slides right into our dashes. Now I have a mission (once I get another SVX). Johnny

If you just want to listen to MP3s, just go get a ipod.
It's cheaper, cleaner and easier. But do check out the mp3car forum. I've put computers in cars since 98 (way before mini-itx boards). SVX is not the easiest car to mod.

screw the iPod - the Creative Labs 60Gb Jukebox is half the price of the iPod (and has a cooler brushed aluminum finish.)

Via has had their nano-itx board out for a while now.
However - the form factor is finally being put to use in the new Mac-Mini. The mac mini is definitely one sweet machine. I think it's awesome that apple decided to use the form factor for one of their machines. As for car scenarios - it would work well, but is not very upgrade friendly. I'm more interested in the P4-Mini ITX boards with a PCI-Express slot. I think there's more potential in there. Plus - ITX boards are still sub "Din" sized, you can make one fit nicely in a double-din radio opening.

although i'd rather build a pc w/ a nano-itx or mini-itx board and be able to do w/ it what i want... buying a macmini to put linux or actual BSD on would be cool
there are mediaplayer distros of linux out there that were made specifically for putting computers to handle your media in a car.

nah, forget the 7" LCD Johnny, what you need to do is remove the glove box and fabricate an arm that holds a 12" LCD. 12" LCD's without molding and cable interface would cost you $35 USD.
i got a buddy of mine who works for a company that manufacturers displays for the gubberment (mostly for submarines and aircrafts). he could probably get me one of their cases they use for the display systems for the lcd housing. i wouldn't put the nano ITX in the DIN slot, it gets too hot and i'd rather save space, i'd mount it under the passenger seat. rewire the box to go under the carpet up into the DIN slot and....ah nevermind, I'll show you mine if I ever get it done. i just met a this dude at my friend's party. he works for a satellite service provider. trying to see if there's a way i can install satellite service in my car. he told me 500K would be around $70/month. full computer in the car instead of that retarded pocket pc windows CE bull****.....one of my dreams. playing mp3's, dvd's, and avi's great and all. being able to access, monitor, and login to HQ and our remote branches anywhere = Godlike that's why i want one of those Vaio U71P's along with a bluetooth cellular phone. 12" LCD for only $35? What kind of resolution or quality for that price? I wouldn't mind getting a 10" touchscreen and mounting it on a modified cell phone mount. I saw one done that way on an SVX somewhere here on the board but can't recall who had it. It was adjustable and you could position it nicely. Not very hideable but very cool anyway.
Two-way satelite broadband in a car would be cool as hell but for the money it would cost I would need to live in my car to make it worth the money. Johnny
