That's not a random guy. That's the vineland crew, and most everyone here knows who they are.

They said only if the original owner had "registered the VIN" or something like that. He said it was about 50/50 and the only way they could make keys off of VINs on these older Subarus.

So I guess that is both good and bad?

Almost, but not quite. It's if the original selling dealership registered the key code to the vin within the Subaru "Star System" Most do this, as they're technically required to by SOA.

Just installed my kill switch. I don't see any reason why anyone with the auto couldn't install the exact same thing. Just splice into the harness.

Re: Theft! She's GONE!!!

Well guys, I have good news to report. My car was found yesterday, and the really good news is that not too much was damaged. Since I just got her back I am not sure yet, but everything looks together. When I started up my car I noticed the manual button was still depressed, so I am thinking the thieves may have taken her for a joy ride. Also, the car was covered in dirt, which also gives credence to the idea they went for a joyride. The only physical damage that seems to have been done was to the ash tray in the center console (behind where your right arm rests while driving). For some reason they yanked that out. They stole my registration and insurance information from my glove box, but left my SVX manual and the change that was under the e-brake handle.

According to the cops, and the parking violations that were attached to my car, she had been parked in the same spot for a week (the exact amount of time she was gone). They told me they thought someone probably needed to get to the other side of town so they drove it there and parked a couple of blocks away from where they needed to go.

I figure that's probably about right, but in the middle of getting from A to B with my car they decided to put an extra 100 miles on my odometer testing her handling, acceleration and top speed.

The weird part of all this is that there is no sign of intrusion. There are no signs the car had to be hot-wired. I think the thief may have a key to my car.

Since it is definitely possible that someone has a key, or at least has a sure-fire way of stealing my car without any trouble, I bought "The Club", well, the "Master Lock" version of it. Hopefully that will prove to be enough of a deterrent/annoyance that they won’t try to steal her again.

The thief apparently made him/herself comfortable in the car. All the mirrors and the seat were adjusted, and the dimmer switch for the instrument console was turned to full blast; I normally have it a couple clicks less ... From where the seat was adjusted, I think the thief is a few inches shorter than myself (I'm 6'1"ish) and not to big. I would guess somewhere around 5'7" -5'10". I say not to big because when I got into the car the tilt wheel was tilted to the full down position. It doesn't really matter though, there is no evidence to conclude anything, but as I type this the image of my land lord is coming to mind..........just kidding...... anyway guys, thanks a lot for the conversation and the sympathy. I really like the idea of a kill switch.

Lesson learned here, and I recommend to everyone with an SVX get comprehensive insurance. I never thought my car would be stolen, especially with over 200,000 miles on it, but it happened...

Hal
