Talking Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Monday I rebuild the power steering pump. But whilst doing that I noticed the idler pulley was a bit noisy.

So yesterday on my way to work i popped into a bearing supplier and bought a 6301 du bearing and fitted it today.

To fit it was just a case of drilling out the 4 studs holding the cover plate on then knocking the old bearing out, pressing the new one in (using a suitably sized socket to hit the outer race) and then riveting the cover back on.

Taking the idler off and replacing the bearing and refitting took just over an hour which included looking for my bits and centre punch and drill etc. Not too shabby.

You may wonder why I didn't just buy a new pulley as they are only $15 ish but living in the UK I would have had to factor in shipping and import duty so it would have come in at closer to $40. Also I would have had to wait a week! The new bearing was $5 so easy decision

Best vacation ever in the fall of '87. Rode every single ferry we could find, found fossils in Bay of Fundy, saw Bells hydroplane....great people, beautiful place.

ps and learned about the huge explosion in Halifax's history, holy crap! Wasn't it an ammunition ship, as I age my memory pixelates sometimes.
Yes still here. Posted a few pics of Cape Breton in this thread back in the summer.
The Gov't is beginning to take off some of the ferries to save costs. Pitty.

The Halifax Explosion is still ranked as the largest man made non-atomic explosion in history. A munition ship and another vessel collided. A ceremony is held every December. 2017 will mark the 100th anniversary of the disaster. Special ceremonies and refurbishment of the memorial are being planned for the occasion.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Suspension is complete. Installation was easier than expected. The only difficult part was accessing the rear struts through the rear speaker deck. Every critical component fit excellent just like OEM. The only issue I had was the brake line retaining bracket. The positioning was slightly off and the size of the hole was larger than the owl bolt. My temporary fix is a zip tie.

I expressed to Andy at AMR that I wanted an OEM like ride. I did not want any bounce or that tuner feel. He suggested 325 front and 250 rear for spring rates.

My car is a stock 1992 with all original part at 59k miles on it for reference. First driving impressions. I had all adjustments on full soft. The ride is firm but not harsh. It dampens the road imperfections sufficient enough while providing greatly improved body control and confidence in the cars cornering ability. The steering felt more precise and more reactive to inputs.

Prior to lowering the car, the rear bearings were quiet and normal. After lowering, the rear bearings became very loud. I suspect because the geometry changed, it shifted the load exerted onto the bearings. I have yet to get the car aligned as it's not being driven.

Hope these pics come through!!

Your SVX looks great! I've had my AMRs for a few years now- first batch- and been happy with them, too. You bring up a good point about ride height affecting the bearing noise. My bearings are a little louder in the back too. Hmm.

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

I spent the last month touching up the small rock chips on the hood to make it as close to flawless as possible. I followed this guy's recommendation and video as I have been a big fan of this work for a long time. Then, I wash, claybar, compounded, fine polished the surface. Before the final step for wax, I cleaned everything down with an water/alcohol spray so the wax can bond cleanly to the virgin paint.

Here are some pics for fun. Enjoy

Thats gorgeous!

If the rest of your engine bay looks like that strut tower I would love to see more of it.

SacSVX, that looks great! I can respect an engine bay like that.

But what about that brake fluid

SacSVX, very nice top mounts. May I ask the manufacturer?

Re: What have you done to your SVX (or other Subaru) today?

Hey SVXfiles,

The top mount came as part of the coilover system by AMR. I actually requested the rubber top mount because I wanted a quiet more OEM like ride but the builder mistakenly gave me the camber adjustable version. Came out great!
