Pulling a windshield?
Anybody who's pulled a windshield have any tips or tricks? I've tried to pull other non-SVX windshields and always end up breaking them. Is the SVX windshield glued in like others?

Re: Pulling a windshield?
Have you used guitar string to remove it before? Use the serrated string from a lower chord and use a sawing motion back and forth with a friend on the other side, and do the entire perimeter of the glass.

Re: Pulling a windshield?
I used a throttle cable cut out of the SVX I was getting the glass from. It's not the texture of the wire, it's how hot it gets after you saw it back and forth.
Try your best to get between the rubber molding and the body, not between the glass and the rubber molding.

Re: Pulling a windshield?
Piano wire, metal guitar string, and throttle cable are all good ideas-- I didn't have a helper available so I went it alone with a box cutter, a steak knife, and a "windshield removal tool" from Harbor Freight.
I started by removing everything from around the windshield that I could, inside and out. Then it took nearly 2 hours of VERY careful work to cut the glass loose, but it was easier than others I've tried because the side and bottom surfaces the windshield mates to are flat rather than recessed (the top is recessed) so I could easily keep my cutting tool parallel to the glass rather than angling the blade and possibly prying against the glass. LOTS of work and time, but worth it to get a un-chipped, un-pitted (blue) genuine Subaru SVX windshield for $38(!) from the U-pull place. |
