Subaru Select Monitor Interface

Hi All,
Just wanted to let everyone know that I have put together a few different versions of a SSM link Interface cable, for transmitting and receiving data to and from the ECU via a laptop computer. This Interface is good for reading ROM code from the ECU, TCU,and ACU. Its also used as a link for the VWRX software to act as a Subaru select monitor to read vital engine management parameter. Please follow link http://www.subaru-svx.net/forum/showthread.php?t=38685 for further info about related projects. Also, a big thanks to Phil and all other members for there continued effort on this project.

I have two different models that I would like to offer for sale to anyone interested in purchasing a premade setup. I am offering a serial converter, that will plug into the serial (com port) on your laptop, or PC without a usb port, and a usb converter, for people without a serial port on there PC. These device will work with any obd1 model Subaru with a standard SSM port and some obd2 with modifications. They have both been tested, and in most cases are not susceptible to the common "92 non communication issue".

Specs:

Serial.
*$70.00
*Plug and play
*Includes all components, and SSM adapter plug. (serial cable included)
*Built in status led for RX, and TX visual signal monitoring.
*No special configurations needed.
*256byte RX buffer memory, and 128byte Tx buffer memory for faster soother data flow.
*All Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac operating systems are supported.

USB.
*$80.00
*Plug and play
*Includes all components, and SSM adapter plug. (usb cable included)
*Built in status led for RX, and TX visual signal monitoring.
*No special port configurations, or drivers are needed. Computer sees it as a true com port .
*256byte RX buffer memory, and 128byte Tx buffer memory for faster soother data flow.
*All Windows, Linux, Unix, and Mac operating systems are supported.

Prices include standard Priority shipping within the US.

Any questions, please post here so all member may view them.
Thanks
Mike.

I have a Select Monitor but not the cable to conect it to the port on the car. Can you make me one of those cables? Cost?

Thanks,
Todd

I'd be interested in one of these. Can you describe what it looks like on the screen of the computer? Is it shown in raw data or does it look like the picture with gauges shown in the thread you mentioned?

Do you mean, you have the actual hand held select monitor from Subaru, or you have software on a pc? I could probably make a cable for you if you need one for the factory select monitor.

There are several things you can do with the cable. You can do a dump of the internal ROM in the ecu and view the hex data. It can also be used with the VWRX software to view the engine parameters in guage form. There will be more functionality later down the road, like turning on power mode for the TCU through the computer.

Hi there,

Please sign me up, and provide me with a way to pay you, (paypal?) I will need a USB version.

Forive my ignorance, but will this allow me to stream data from the ECU in real time? I am in the process of building an in dash computer, and would very much like to see data at a glance.

Also is this VWRX software freely available, or where can I purchase it.

Thanks so much,
Patrick

Maybe a dumb question but will there be re-writing capabilities in this? AKA burning new ROMS

PM sent with payment info. The VWRX software is free, although donations are probably more than welcomed. You can download it from http://www.vwrx.com/index.php?pg=selectmonitor here. Phil has the configuration file that will need to be updated on his website http://www.alcyone.org.uk/ssm/ecu/SelectMonitor.ini here.

There is not a capability to flash the rom inside the ECU with this cable. The Capability to flash the on board rom was not added to these ECUs. However, you can download the rom with the cable, modify the data in the rom, and burn new roms, that can be plugged into the extra socket in the ECU via a memory adapter. I will be offering the adapter board, roms, and the service to burn rom files to roms for people shortly.

So you download the software and plug in the cable and that's it?

You download the software, update the configuration file with the svx parameters, and plug in the cable. Thats it, watch the gages display the ECU values Just dont get distracted with the screen while you are driving.

I have the Select Monitor from Subaru. It is missing the cable that connects from the port in the car to the round connector on the Select Monitor itself.

Yeah guys. You plug this thing in then run the "Select Monitor Dump" program from VWRX.com to get your ROM ID. Then you open up the SelectMonitor.ini file Phil made, changing the ROM ID of his SVX entry to the one that you just found. Run the SelectMonitor program and bam, you've got gauges/info!

But be aware that at the moment, the software is very buggy. It has a habit of locking up when switching between gauge and graph mode, as well as falling out of sync with the ECU as it attempts to update values. I have asked questions about this in the official forum but it looks like the creator has vanished. So I don't know if the software will ever be updated to fix these problems.

However, the Linux-based software that Phil is working on seems most promising. It cannot do what VWRX's can at the moment (all it can do is dump data from the ECU and TCU), but the actual communication code is all there. The ability to display incoming information as a graphical representation is merely left to be coded. And since Phil is an active member here who is very much interested in the project, his will be the way to go in the future.

It would be very cool for more programming-oriented people to get their hands on adapters. A joint programming project would be awesome. Heck, I'm tempted to try my hand at a Java program or something.

Anyway, that's the lowdown. These cables allow you to connect a computer to your car and read information from the ECU, TCU, ACU and possibly other computers in the car. The actual software to make sense of the data is somewhat available but not perfect.

Nomake, thanks for the great explanation. I was a bit tired last night while trying to write the post. One of the biggest reason I have decided to make these cables readily available, is with hopes to get more people interested in the project. There are some great programs available in java format for data logging and such, but I think we need to get a few more programmers interested to help speed things along.
Will be posting some pics of the cables tonight.
