Those are some great stories! Since it's story time here on the network...I'll share my story.

It starts with a Neon in 2004. I bought the car at auction for $2000 with 50k on it. What a deal! The car ran great! Passed inspection and everything was cool. In March of 2005 I had just gotten back from England and I was heading to my college class in the morning. Someone crossed the highway without looking and I t-Boned them going somewhere between 45-50 MPH. I didn't have time to react. So I was fine and the car was definitely totaled. The insurance company gave me $4700 for the car. So I took that money and went back to the auction with hopes of getting another low mileage daily driver. Every car I looked at went over $4700. I went to several auctions looking for vehicles. I almost ended up with a Jag or an Altima, or an Eclipse.

At one auction I was just getting frustrated with the selection so I was getting ready to leave when in the dark just outside of the building I see these interesting headlights. I walked over to the car and saw the windows and instantly fell in love. I was excited because it had fairly low mileage (97k) and it was an automatic (I wasn't comfortable with driving stick then). I looked at my brother and asked him what it was. He had heard of a SVX but never saw one. The car pulled into the lane to be auctioned off and the first thing the auctioneer said was "title delay...dealers only!" I was so heart broken. I went home and started researching these cars. That was when I found this site. I wasn't sure about the car after reading about the issues. So the next week I went back to the auction and as I was walking through the lot of cars I saw the same SVX. I was happy. I actually got to sit in the car and play with the little buttons. When time came the car rolled through the lane and I got the car for $1800.

My brother drove it home on PA temp tags that night and on the way home it started spewing transmission fluid everywhere. Once again I was heart broken. I thought that I would have to bring the car back and try to sell it because it was a dud. Turns out that a hose was loose and after fixing that everything was fine. Since then I drove the car for over a year before the front diff went out. After spending a winter in the garage the car went to see older Tom and this past June I drove the car home from Cumberland with 4.44 gears!

Great story, Beck
Isn't it interesting that every car "has a story". And everyone too.

I still remember the first time I ever saw an SVX..

It was like my junior year in high school (98ish) and my friend and I were driving to the junkyard in Corvallis to get some parts for his Camry, when we see this really weird looking car about a block in front of us.. Conversation went something like:

Merlin: (yes that is his real name) "What the hell is that?" *points*
Me: "I dunno dude but it's cool lookin"
*gets closer*
Me: "It looks like it says 'Subaru' on the back of it"
Merlin: "That's not a Subaru dude... Must be some weird sports car"
*Both of us in unison as we read the back*
"Holy s**t it is a Subaru!"

I didn't know what it was until a few years later when I bought my 87 Subaru hatchback and stumbled across the Subaru board and found out about the SVX, but I knew from then on that I wanted one...

My Love for Alcyones both big & small, started in '85 when I laid eyes on my first XT. I loved the "fighter jet" cockpit, and go-go-gadget way everything was presented.
I first saw the SVX in the Road & Track guide, which I still own. I followed it 's history through the years & was heartbroken when Subaru axed it.
I said when I first saw an XT, someday I will own one of those. I've owned 2 so far. I said the same thing about the SVX. Hopefully within a month I'll own my first one.
Then I'll have owned each Alcyone out there. Well except an XT6

The story of the acquisition of my first SVX is rather mundane but the second one is interesting. After I had my first one and met Earthworm at Dabob, I knew I wanted a 5-speed. As there was nothing wrong with my 4EAT I didn’t want to cut it up. That meant buying another SVX with a bad transmission. I also knew that my wife would be opposed to the idea of me having 2 SVXs (I now have 4 but those are stories for another day) but I thought if I gave her the 5 speed she wouldn’t be too angry for too long. It generally being easier to obtain forgiveness than permission, I thought I’d surprise her at Christmas.

I bought a ’92 Pearlie SVX from Salt Lake City with no motor and a bad transmission for $800.00 and had it shipped to Washington State where a friend of mine picked it up. When I first saw it I realized that the seller had cut the entire wiring harness off at the firewall with a hacksaw – damn.

My friend and I dropped the car off (no motor, bad tranny and no wiring harness) at my mechanic's shop and asked him to replace all the wiring, install a motor and put in a 5-speed. My mechanic, who up to that time had never even seen an SVX let alone worked on one, was up to the task. It was over 100 hours of labour at $35.00 Cdn per hour but I think he did a great job.

A couple of days before Christmas I hid my SVX (also a Pearlie) in the neighbourhood and started to drive the new 5-speed. My wife (remember – she still didn’t know that I had bought a second SVX) didn’t notice the difference even though she stood outside the window one evening and talked to me as I was pulling into the neighbourhood.

On Christmas morning I told her that her main present was about a 10-minute drive away and that we would have to go and get it. As we left the house I suggested that she drive. She got into her new car (still thinking that it was my 4EAT SVX) and noticed the stick shift. She was so bewildered that I could almost see the wheels spinning in her head. After about 10 seconds of complete and utter confusion I asked her if she wanted an explanation. She said she did so I told her I bought a 5-speed transmission. She was content with that explanation for about 5 seconds, then the wheels started to spin in her head again. I waited for another 10 seconds or so while she tried to figure out when I had the transmission swap done (I drive my SVX every day) then I told her that I bought another SVX to go around the 5-speed transmission. Then I told her I hoped she likes her Christmas present.

It wasn’t until the day after Boxing Day that the sh!t hit the fan for having bought another SVX without having consulted her. That took only a few days to blow over and she’s loved her SVX since.

Sweet 16-split window style

The First time I saw a SVX was in the game Gran Turismo. I remember seeing it on the game and falling in love with it even on those crappy graphics. I remember thinking it was just another one of those cars that never was brought over to the US. When I was riding with my family to my sister's wedding in Texas, we drove by a subaru dealership (the closest one was about 45 mins away) and I was shocked to see two blue SVXs sitting in the front of the lot (this was in 1999). I made my dad promise to come back with me when we got back into town so we could look at the car. When we came back, we went to the dealership and test drove it and of course i was crazy about it. I told my dad i thought it was awesome, and that i thought the blue color was sweet, but we went home without it. The next week, I was home alone and about to jump in the shower when the doorbell rang. I almost didn't answer, but when I did, there was the salesman holding out the keys, and simply said "it's yours". I was so surprised that day, and i sat in it all afternoon ( I was only 15, so I couldn't drive it). I later found out that the owner of the dealership really liked SVXs and bought them at every chance. I guess that is why there were FIVE of them on the lot, which is pretty impressive considering it is a small dealer in oklahoma that also sold chrysler, and plymoth. They were all 94s. I Remember each of them. One was a bordeaux LS, and was a local trade. It was really nice but was close to 15,000. There was also a blue LS, and I remember wanting that one because it had a sunroof and ABS. (I've never seen another LS with a sunroof) but it was 13, and it had been smoked in so I couldn't get that one either. One was a Black LS, and the salesman who sold me mine had already claimed it for himself. The Last one was the blue L, and it's the one I found in my driveway that next week. I remember being surprised that none of them were AWD.

aw shucks

Harry, Harry, Harry. Well, I haven't been on since April...and a lot has happened. But I found this post and wanted to reply. I remember calling the dealership in Herndon, and then kinda forgetting about letting them know there was a low mileage SVX. My full name is difficult to read and pronounce, so when I got a call early one morning at work from someone who had my name but the incorrect pronunciation, I was groaning and thinking I had a motivated vendor trying to pin me to an appointment early in the day. Turns out, it was Harry, calling to thank me. The rest is history! Harry is still one of the most highly respected names to grace my address book ever. And his family is as wonderful as he is.

This is the first time I announce this... But here it goes:

Back in 1990, we had (back home) a used cars dealership filled with German cars imported from Switzerland. The Swiss cars are known for their "mint" condition because of the strict maintenance regulations imposed by their government itself. The cars imported from Germany, would be of lower quality due to the fact that Germans rarely do oil change , and just "fill" what is missing

So my dad and his cousins would flee to Switzerland to buy cars and ship them back home (the margin was worthwhile )

Because our lot was big, we were approached in 1993 by the Subaru dealership, wanting to buy a part of the land to set up a branch in our area. The dealer himself (well Lebanon is small, there is only one dealer for the whole country) met with dad and left brochures of all the subarus on display back then...

This is when MOI saw the SVX , and I WAS IN . I had flashes of the Koeniggsegg when I used to look at it in the brochures, I guess because of the rear fenders' look with the "big" tyres in the back (well you know, kids fantasies)

But also was 14 ... the SVX was being sold for $55K at that time...

So from a 1975 MG BGT to a 1985 Merc 200E to a 1987 BMW 325 Conv (in 2000), as I was driving by a tyres shop, I saw Silver. I nearly had an accident going from the left lane to the right one just to check it out

Silver had 22,000 Kms at that time, it was practically brand new with the original paint well maintained. Paid $4,500 as a difference for the BMW (325ci, white F/O)... I was willing to pay even more just to get that car

Now the real story begins... I directly covered all the "Subaru" Badges in a way or another, applied Vynil layers on the front badge, rear taillight and filled the caps with bondo and repainted them. WOMEN thought it was a Lambo or something... SS was in heaven

(Now this I never announced to the board) Then Hell broke loose when a stupid carpenter T-boned my door (just the door) with his stupid old Merc as he was illegally going the opposite direction and the nightmare in finding another door began. NONE was found used and Subaru wanted 800$ for the DOOR ALONE emptied from everything else. I was heartbroken, my mint condition (chick magnet) car was in pain and I couldn't do anything... But I was lucky that I was driving the car with the interior upholstery removed because one of the tabs of the master window switch broke and I was looking for another before installing it... so the upholstery was never in the accident.

I browsed the web and found a complete door for $500 in Alabama, exactly the same color as my car's. I know it was expensive (in 2002), but had to ship it in a parts container cargo (sea) until I got it and had Silver running again...

I was also a member on a Yahoo SVX forum before Chris created this lovely family and I proudly became a part of it.

Sorry for the long story

Gotta get in on this, someone was asking me why I identified with the SVX so much, and I had no really good answer. I mumbled something about the pinnicle of form and function and let it get away.

But here you all are, there are two types of SVX owners, those who own the car, and those whom are OWNED by thier car, I am certainly one of the latter.

I don't remember exactly when I first saw the SVX, but I know that from that moment forward I was drawing them, bragging about them, dreaming about them, and reading about them. I belive I was 12.

When I was 15 I read "Where the Suckers Moon" a book about the SVX, Subaru, and the failed advertising campaign.

By the time I was 18, and the SVX had been out of production for a year, I knew how to replace the rear bearings, I theorized the 4.44 swap, and knew the quarter mile times for every year with every option,I knew every paint code, I knew the theory of operation behind the smooth shifts. I knew then name of the company that made the faux suede. I had STILL never driven one.

When I was 19 I went to buy one, and I came home with a Camero, unable to find one. Every time I'd go out to buy one, I'd come home in something else and say "next time"

When I was 20 I found one and test drove it, I was broke and couldn't buy it- but I was obsessed.

This car has been in more of my dreams than any other single object/person/concept. I spent hours puzzling over the lines, wondering how it could be 4 different cars from 4 different angles, agonizing about wheather I like it with a spoiler or without, how a silver one had a different attitude entirely than a pearly.

When I was 24 my girlfriend at the time had had enough of hearing me talk and talk and talk about this car that I'd never owned. When she saw one at a dealership she paid full sticker for it and handed me the keys and a loan note that was approximately 3 times more than the car was worth. It was the best birthday present anyone had ever given me, even though I had to pay for it every month for 3 years.

Two years ago the transmission grenaded, to the credit of my friends, word spread like wildfire and 2 of them actually got me bereavement cards meant for people who had lost a family member, and they hardly even snicker about it every day anymore.

I'm 27 now, and nearly $10k and 30k miles later and I know this car so much better than the back of my hand. Its a vice, its an insanity, its a lifestyle. Its not fast or expensive or elite. But its the only car I've ever really wanted.

Lol, I guess the cats out of the bag, I really kind of like the SVX.

Oh no... you'd better start your own thread for this!

Maybe you need another SVX forum just for you

The first time i ever saw an SVX was when I was maybe 18 or 19 and I was playing Gran Turismo 2 on the PlayStation.... even when the graphics weren't that clear... Isaw the car and I was like WHAT IS THAT??? I bought it and raced it and I loved it.... of course back then there were no Subarus in Mexico (im from Guadalajara by the way) so I went online to look for pics (I tought it was a car I would only find in Japan) but I was amazed that the car was sold in the US... so I downloaded as much pics as I found... i fell in love with the car and its italian heritage by Guigaro (I always wanted to be a car designer).

The first time I saw one in person was like 3 years later when I moved to Texas... I drove trough the border and the first car I saw cruising on the freeway next to me was a beautiful Silver SVX... I was like "OH MY GOD!!! ITS THE CAR FROM THE GAME!!!" Then I founf out he was going to the same Gym I was going... but never met the owner... a couple months after that I small used car dealer by my house had a Red SVX with a little wreck on the front but they were fixing it.... It had custom red interiors and golden wheels... but when I asked how much, the owner told me... well, my son liked the car so we wont sell it anymore and will give it to him.... not even a month after that I saw the car al Riced out with a big aluminum wing and tons od Ferrari stickers.....

It was finally about a year ago when I was decided on give my Miata to my sister... so I looked on Craigslist.... I always wanted an SVX and there were always a lot for sale.... but all of them where automatic... and since I read how many problems the tranny had... + i deffinelty wanted a manual car... so one day I saw this one that said 5 speed conversion... for $3000!!!!!! Inmediatly I called the owner, he told me he was waaay north in phoenix... but I didnt cared... went to see the car... it was in really good shape (just the faded black paint in the roof and trunk) and I was like, I want it... I test drove it and I feel in love again. I told him I dont have the money right now and he was like.. well there is a kid comming tonight, he said he had the money already... so I was like... would you take $500dlls now and I'll come this weekend with the rest?? He was cool abot it, and the kid showed up when I was there.... he had the cash and he was ready to take it... but this guy was like, sorry its sold to this guy... I was so happy

Went to my credit union.. asked for the money, they said its fine, gave me the check next day and everything went smooth.

Im never selling this car... ever

ive read everyones stories so i thought id share my own. it all starts with a 94 saturn. i moved out here to colorado about 2 years ago, drove a toyota corolla which was my cousins then had to give it back when she returned from argentina. i worked my a$$ off all summer to save up money for a car. i had 2 jobs working on average 13 hours a day, thats pretty hard for a teenager, i had no social life haha. my parents dont hand me anything, i pay for all my gas, parts, cars, insurance, college (next year), you name it, i pay. i think its good though, ive learned alot and have had to make hard decisions. its a great life lesson that i will definitely pass on to my children. school was closing in and i needed a car so me and my dad went shopping. after going to countless stealerships and driving cars in my price range, we could not find anything reliable. finally i called a rent-a-car place that had some cars for sale. we went by and took a look, they had a caddy, mazda and the saturn which i bought. it was a good car, GREAT on gas compared to the subby, still getting used to that haha. the saturn did great... until winter came. a buddy of my dads came out to live with us for awhile and one night i was talking about how i wanted a subaru, i didnt care what, as long as it was awd. he was telling me about this subaru a friend of his had once, he talked about the windows, which i had no idea what he was talking about, but he couldnt remember the name. he just new is was 3 letters. i kept insisting it was a wrx or something, but he assured me it wasnt. a month or 2 later he found some pictures online. i had never seen anything like it in my life! fate took hold and the next week, by chance, there was an ad in the classifieds. i wasnt even shopping for a car, i just like seeing whats for sale. i called right away and the car was less than 3 miles from walmart where i was. i drove over and took a look and decided to test drive it. the seller arrived shortly and after a short test drive i was hooked. i had only driven in not even a mile (the alternator belt was broken, he fixed it before i bought it). i had made my decision within a few days to buy it. my dads friend was so surprised when he saw me driving up in it, and i felt so dumb for not knowing about such an amazing car before. i dont think i will ever sell this car and if i do itll only be because i have more than one.
