car smoking from passenger side of engine bay

I have a bad HP hose on the power steering. Its not a huge leak but it is pretty bad. I first started seeing smoke back in the summer once when i filled up for gas. Saw some smoke coming from underneath the hood. Went away when i got home. Then when my coil pack went bad in december it smoked real bad when i was at a traffic light...but went away and no smoke since. Today however i was filling up to get gas and i saw light smoke coming up from the hood. Took the car to work and now i get back home and theres smoke coming from the rear of the engine back....looks like fluid leaked onto the cat and is causing smoke or something. Why would it be ok for 2 months and now just happen again? Hopefully it will go away because this is kinda embarassing. I will buy a new Hose as soon as i can.

That's your power steering return hose. It has a "S" shaped bend on it and it's leaking. Change it out I guess. You can get a similear hose from your local car store and just swap it out.

Lwin dont you mean the high pressure hose? Mine leaks pretty bad. It hasn't smoked like this in 2 months. Im assuming it will go away once it burns off on the exhaust....i sure hope it goes away because the smoke is really embarassing.

YES, this happens to me and the dealer i bought it from and SOA dealer said valve cover, when i thought, it should be burning oil or coolant, but both were full when i hear the PS pump really loud (similar to my trucks previous problems) I got PS repair in a bottle stuff and it helps, kinda. Its really embarassing some mexicans pulled up to me at a light and were like "Your car's smoking dude" I said Yeah it does that, One time I just said, yeah its an exotic, what do you want.

Note to self, fix the hose tomorrow (duh!)

Hoping it'll go away isn't very realistic is it? Just cuz it went away before? Simple fix. Take Lwin's advice and replace the hose. At a minimum, climb under there and see WTH's happening. NOT smelling or seeing smoke is cooool!

Notice that I said " i will replace it when i can." I'm not about to pay 100 bucks from subaru parts.com for a stupid hose. I'm going to try and find a good used line first and see what happens. I'm sure it will go away soon....probably just needs to burn off the pipe like it did last time. But I'm looking into buying another hose as we speak.

Sorry, I missed that one statement about hose replacement, and I see you've been under the car to check it out. My gaffe could have been attributable to the neighbor's B'day party I had just attended, and a few brewskis. No offense intended.

That's the PS return hose from the looks of things. Jack up your car (use the right jack). Then go underneath your car and take a bucket. Remove the damaged hose. ATF fluid will gush out (in your face, I've swallowed some in the past that way). Put a bucket there. Replace it with a high pressure high heat hose. You can get one for around 15 bucks vs Subaru's 80. use the clamps and put it back. Refill with ATF fluid. You are done.

Pardon my ignorance....

So the return hose is not the same thing as the high pressure hose right? I just want to get that clear...because Tom told me my HP hose was leaking pretty bad too and this was back in the summer. Whats the difference in the 2 if any?

This hose on the passenger side looks to be a leaky one...no idea what it is but im guessing its the return line?

ATF from the power steering is leaking onto the pre-cat pipe right before the header as you can see. Took the car on a 15 mile trip and it only started smoking when i parked it in the driveway and let it idle while i popped the hood. You could see smoke starting to come up a little so i got under the car and looked to see where it was coming from and it was this same pipe. Smoke cleared after a second and didnt return. Its like an on and off thing...i dont know why it doesnt stay constant since the leaks appears to be constant.

i'm not overly knowledgable on this topic but when i first got my svx i had to replace the power steering lines for what seems to be the same reason. it would smoke on and off, sometimes with a month in between incidents. i got my lines replaced and after that the smoking stopped for like a week and then it started up again. i wasn't ready to go back to my dealership and spend another $200 to have the lines replaced again so i put in some Lucas Oil power steering leak stoper and the smoking hasn't occured since and it's stayed full when before i was putting in a quart every other week. before you spend the $100 on parts or double on parts and labor i would try some of the Lucas stuff, for $7 it fixed my problem and i'd recomend it to anyone.

Thanks for the tip! Will try that tomorrow morning if i have time. Anyone think this can cause bad results?

Me too!

I think that Ive got the exact some problem going on right now. Whenever I had climate control on, I would smell some type of burned fluid coming in through the vents whenver I would be stopped at a stoplight, but it would go away as soon as I was back in motion. So I popped my hood today finally to see what was going on, and alittle bit of smoke came out from the passenger side rear. So I am in the same boat here. Does anyone know part numbers for the hose from either OEM hose, or maybe a NAPA or Autozone part that would work?
