Awwww come on guys,

He drives a Fiero too. Another car that was only made a short time.
I agree with them thou. I just had a wheel bearing replaced and looks like my trans will be next. But on the other side of it you already have the basic's down from wrenching on the Fiero. Only thing I dont like is there is no room really to work around on the SVX. But hey, I have worked on other things like that and your about ½ my age so you can get into those little area's.

Maybe look for an XT. Thats my daily car these days. Here is a picture of it. This one is lifted 2" with 14" rims now. It's a blast. Not as nice of a ride as the SVX but more fun to drive. You can find the older Subarus on http://www.ultimatesubaru.net/forum/ or http://www.xt6.net/forum/
both are great sites with alot of nice people and info like this site. Also you can check with MnSubaru.com for local stuff. Most of them are around your age with to much money on thier hands.

sounds like a sweet deal, just please don't apply the same treatment to the svx that you did your accord

He won't need decals or stickers for as much torque as the SVX makes.

Haha, the Accord was purchased with most of the stuff pre-riced. I helped it along a little - it's basically a running joke I talked to the guy again today and he said he purchased the car not too long ago and doesn't have the title yet. He doesn't know if he's willing to sell it yet, but I'm trying to talk him into it for sure. I'm not scared to do any wrenching, but I'd like it to be reliable through winter. If anyone has a cheap XT or XT6 I suppose I wouldn't mind buying one of those either, as long as it's AWD.

Heck no, why would I take the Caddy motor out? I bet it's lighter than the SVX motor, and gives me 100 more lb-ft..

Cliff's notes: I want a cheap AWD vehicle for the winter!

I love my SVX. It's a fantastic car and I hope to have it for a long, long, long time. But they're not getting any younger and a 13-year-old car with 188k miles on the clock is going to need some care. The SVX is a complicated, rare car. That means parts are expensive and occasionally difficult to find.

I don't mean to discourage you. I love my SVX, but it's not my daily driver any more. I probably put less than a thousand miles on mine this year.
I appreciate the advice, but a 13 year old car is still new to me - I drive an '86 and an '87. Complicated I can deal with - I drive a V8 Fiero and rare I am already living with. I need a car bad enough where I'll pay just to get one now, but not bad enough where it's 100% necessary. Probably 90% necessary, as I'm sure the Honda's gonna explode in the next few weeks/months.

Numbers please. My money is on the eg33 being lighter. I already know it's weight. Found it on a 10 year old small plane engine builder's message board. (:

The 4.9 weighs 371 lbs ready to go with everything attached. I'm missing the power steering pump and some other small things so I'd estimate ~360 lbs before switching intakes. You can't ignore the +100 lb-ft though! :P

The SVX motor makes decent torque, but it doesn't compare to 300 lb-ft at 2300 rpm (John's 4.9 in Kansas, who did my exhaust and air conditioning). I still love the SVX though. It'd be perfect as a winter car for me.

Oh, almost forgot. You know how I said I needed a car at the beginning of this thread?

I broke the driver's side window with my head.

Now I really need a car..

I remember reading somewhere that the full SVX motor with intake manifold, engine wiring harness and on a palate ready to ship weighed about 530lbs. It was on one of those VW Vanagon sites and someone was doing an EG33 swap.

What about the trans?

Northstar is a damn light engine for it's displacement.

Well the 4EAT weighs over 200lbs. I would agree that the Northstar is pretty light for its size!
